Blooming Keyless Entry

I know there is a lot on this forum about it but I am totally confused now.

My car did not come with any key or fob with a gizmo as the previous owner lost it.

I have to unlock it manually. There is a sensor on the dash and also an led. There is some wires going to a box under the carpet underneath the drivers seat.

The key is plain metal.

It is 1995 st202 so am presuming it had the standard toyota alarm.

What does the central locking remote look like? There are so many types advertised to fit all toyotas and the suppliers just say ' buy one and see'!

Is it a fob or one of those ones the metal key fits inside?

And the alarm fob, is it the square one with red and black buttons?

Help me! It's been driving me mad for days now!

If anyone has a photo please post it.

Cheers

Same as mine UK P-reg late 1996, ever manage to press the red button by mistake and set off the alarm.:wacko:

Cheers,

Does that open the doors and set the alarm?

Some places have told me I need an oval fob with 2 buttons for the alarm and a seperate plastic key case with buttons for the central locking.

I just can't believe I would need 2 devices originally.

If yours does both jobs then at least I know what I'm after now!

Yeah, one press of the black button locks the doors and arms the alarm. It also has a slide switch on the side to select whether or not the movement sensors are enabled inside the car.

The red button is a panic switch to set the alarm off, great for scaring the crap outta people as they walk past the car

That picture is of a Scorpion remote alarm fob. Mercedes used the same system. You pay your money and Scorpion put your logo on the remote. Because they are so old they are difficult, but not impossible, to get parts for. Some of the remotes had a cicuit board inside where you could scratch off connectors to match your original. They only sure way of getting a functioning alarm is to replace is with a fresh control box with two new keys. About £150. There is another type of alarm/remote made by Toyota called TVSS. Remotes can be added to this type of system. The remotes are black and sort of oval with two buttons, one for lock and one for unlock. The places to look for the control box are; under the driver's seat (rare); behind the glove box (common); behind the instrument cluster (rare); and behind the radio (common). You are looking for a flat squarish black box about 100mm long X75mm wide X20mm thick, with a thick bundle of cables coming out. This bundle often splits into two- one goes off for sensors and the other for power and earths.

Hope this helps Ray

Right,

I have managed to get hold of one of the 'scorpion' square ones. I do have some gizmo under the drivers seat but I wouldn't say it is a thick bundle of wires. just a couple wrapped in coiled plastic shrouding. How do I code the fob to the car? Anyone?

I see there is already a thread on this but I think it mainly relates to original toyota fob and not scorpion.

Cheers

It may be based on the Scorpion alarm system, but i have a specific section in my celica user manual with the instructions for the 'Toyota 5000 Theft Deterrent System' with pictures of the Fob, and full instructions, so it was from toyota, and has not been bought from Scorpion.

All UK cars from 95 on *should* have this kind of key fob:

fc_1_b.JPG

and a seperate key.

The key fob operates the locks and the alarm in one go. As far as I am aware the Japenese Imports didn't come with an alarm as standard, but they did have central locking from a fob.

If you have got an alarm then the alarm sensor box for the TVSS system is located next to the gear lever to see it just pull the gear lever surround up (which will unclip) if you can see a box with TVSS written on it then you need the key fob shown above.

The key fob is useful but not amazing - with a new Battery it works about 5 foot away from the car!!

I would fit an aftermarket system like a Toad, it will be a lot more secure and could be cheaper in the long run if you end up getting into needing bits reprogramed etc

Right,

I have looked everywhere I can and can't find any sort of alarm gizmo, so am guessing my car only has the central locking.

I had purchased a square 'scorpion' fob but obviously this ain't gonna work. Bummer.

So do I need to now get one of those oval shaped fobs to get the central locking to work?

Got both fobs now and can't get any to work. Done all that resetting lark but nothing. I am sad. Looks like I will have to go to the Toyota garage. Boo Hoo. :crybaby:
