70mph Judder

i've noticed a judder in the steering wheel over between 70 and 80mph recently. I think it may be the car rebelling against me as i've decided to sell.

So, I got the 2 front wheels balanced and its still there :ffs: The guy said they weren't far out anyway.

Anyone got any ideas what else it could be. Anything i can check easily? i mean, its not bad but might put a potential buyer off. i suppose there is a chance the guy in the tyre place was an idiot

First thoughts when I saw the thread was wheel balance, but if they say its ok, i'm not too sure!

It only happens at high speed then?

Does it go away if you go faster than 70-80? (on a private road of course ;))

Could be any of the following -

Buckled wheels

Incorrect balancing

Defective tyre

Loose Suspension component(s)

Worn Shock absorbers

Dodgy pads for worn discs

First thing is as people have said, swap rears and fronts around - that takes the wheels and tyres out of the equation.

If it still does it check suspension, hubs and brakes.

I agree.. swap them over front to rear.. and while you are doing so, check if you have centralising rings fitted (if they are aftermarket wheels) and get the rear wheels balanced before putting them on the front.

You could also run your fingers over the tread of the tyre to see if it feels smooth, especially on the edges, some tyres can form a defect where the tyre goes "humpy" (as we call it in the trade ) and it feels like a 50p coin.

As for the list above... add to it the drive shaft.

My money would be on something related to the wheel balance, wheather it be a buckled wheel, defective tyre or quite simple the wheel balance... ask the place that balanced them how they done it... dynamically or static.. if the done it static then that will be the problem, not all tyres/cars like this method (especially on the front), get them redone dynamically... you may be able to tell how they have done it yourself by looking at the weights... here's how...

Look at the balance weights, now, assuming they have used self adhesive weights on the inside of the wheel...

If there are 2 rows of weights.. 1 just behind the face of the wheel and another near the back edge of the wheel, then it is dynamic balance.

If there is only 1 row of weights, either in the centre of the wheel or near the back edge, then there is a possibilty they have used the static balance... i say a possibilty because it is possible for a wheel to require only one row of weights even on a dynamic setting.

EDIT: having looked at that... boy do i need to get out more!!

OK....i'll try fronts for rears swap today and report back

I did give one of the front wheels a whack on a kerb in tesco (:!Removed!: dumbass) but that was 7/8 months ago and this judder has only happened in the last 2 months. Can't think of any event that might have caused it.

Well, swapped fronts for rears and the judder seems to be gone.

the tyres seem fine...no humpies

looked at the weights and there are two rows, so i guess they're balanced dynamically - is that better?

thanks for the advice lads!
