Having been a big Honda Prelude 2.2vtec fan for 3 years on the 28/09/06, my baby was written off by a woman in a Rav 4 doing the school run ! With the insurance money and a bit extra, i have about 8k to spend and cant decide between the 140bhp or the 190bhp Gen 7 Celica. I would appreciate any help at all on any faults/things to look out for etc on both models. Have been looking for a couple of weeks now but all the 190s i see are all high milers.

My answer : Neither :P Gen 6 GT4 :yahoo:

Seriously though, if you do want a Gen 7, go for the 190, you will only be dissapointed afterwards otherwise

You can still get low milage 190's but because the 190 became the T-Sport around 2002 time you may find it easier getting a T with the mileage you want.

But will he get it for the price he wants...? Doubt it... I'm starting to think the 140 isn't that bad after all - a Civic Type-R driver friend of mine has been having a few rides recently and he is astonished at how much pull it has!

The 190 is geared lower which makes it easier to pull away than the 140 (and generally easier to drive), but also noisier at motorway speeds and generally thirstier. The engine has slightly more torque throughout also. To get the advantage of the valve lift on the 190 you really need to be screaming along (the nomal Celica engine needs to driven quite hard to get the best from it anyway since the torque curve is quite flat). I can't remember the exact figure, but it is something like 50mph in second before the lift comes in at a little over 6000rpm.

There are problems with the lift bolts on some of the early 190s. Like a lot of Toyotas, the alloys are prone to corrosion as are the discs. The tailgate strut is also a known failure. If you go for a 190, the biggest problem you might have is finding one that hasn't had the gearbox thrashed by drivers trying to 'keep it in the range' (changing up while still maintaining valve lift).

Thanks everyone who took time to reply.....looks like the 190 then !

Does anyone know if any mods are available to increase the BHP by about 25 ???

If you want to make it quicker already - I'd suggest looking at a GT4, much easier to make faster, and a fair bit quicker 'out the box'

mate the 190 is highly tuned already - 2.0n/a 190bhp !!

Supercharger/turbo is the most effective as i guess you know but not much else is worth changing on the 190 - maybe better exhaust and panel filter may see a few bhp increase .

A lot of 190 s are actually under powered , coming in at 180-175 instead - theres a big thing about it on celica-club now , a lot of peeved 190 owners !!

Mike speaks sense......for power its gotta be the 3sgte powered GT4 ;)

Agree with the sentiments above. If you want a Celica of 200bhp+, get a Gen6 GT4 with the 3S-GTE lump - makes the most sense money wise.

If money is no object and you want a G7, then uprated cams, better fuelling, exhaust, filter, chip, and supercharge the 2zz-ge in a Gen7 190 - probably cost about £7k all in, maybe a little more and you'll probably have yourself about 230 - 240BHP and a very fragile engine. Or buy either model celica, and get Fensport to put the 3S-GTE in it (check the website, and look for the stats on their G7!!!)! That upgrade'll put you back more than a new G7 would cost you...

Like I say, if its raw power you want from a Celica, its the GT4 all the way!
