Exhaust Noise Advice Please

Hi All,

I'm still getting to know my recently purchased new shape 1.8 VVTi and am wondering what if any noise I can expect to hear from the exhaust when I rev the engine.

It's kind of a throaty, almost diesel engine like noise and I initially thought the exhaust was blowing. Had an exhaust company look at it and they suggested a new gasket between the middle and tail section which I've had done. Also the heat shield was adjusted. I'm assured there are no other problems with the exhaust. However this doesn't seem to have changed anything. The noise seems more pronounced towards the back of the car.

Can I expect such noise from this particular engine?

Advice or comments would be welcome.

I've often found VVTi engines to sound rather harsh under acceleration compared to the pre-VVTi engines in the original pre-facelift Avensis, the old 2.0 3S-FE was a gem in comparisson, any noise your hearing might not be from the exhaust but could be from the engine, air-intake, there are lots of things that factor in noise.

Are you hearing this noise throughout the rev range. I generally find that below 2k - 2.5k revs that there is little noise from the engine and none from the exhaust. Above 3k the engine is noisy under the vvt-i but I don't notice any noise from the exhaust. This is my second vvt-i and I've never noticed the exhaust.

Thanks for your reply. I tend to notice it more when pulling away or if I rev the engine whilst stationary. Can't say I've noticed it when cruising in say 5th even at a decent speed. If the car was a sporty hatch I wouldn't have taken a bit of notice, but I wasn't expecting an Avensis to sound like this. Like you I wasn't expecting noise at low revs.
