Dension Icelink With W58814

Hi, I finally have an iceLink and connected it to the CD changer port of my W58814 but am having problems getting it set up, my 3rd Gen iPod shows the warning screen "Warning Don't browse iPod while driving!" and then Dension> Playlists 1/10, OK to disconnect. My Toyota manual says to press the "DISC" button to change between the CD Player and the Changer but this has no effect and neither do the DISC up and down buttons and also none of the buttons on the iPod work. My iPod has the latest update and I have rebooted it, I have also removed the fuse to reset the CD player and interface, so if anyone can add anything else for me to try please let me know, it would be much appreciated.

If I remember correctly, you press the cd change button on your headunit up so it display 6-1 on your headunit.

Then if you look at your ipod, it should display a menu, you press the up and down seek button to navigate through the menu

To select the option, with the option highlighted, you hold down the down seek button

Hi, yes that is what I thought would be the case but so far the DISC button does not want to change between the CD Player and the changer (iceLink)

so what happens when you press the cd change button?

there isn't a cd change button on the headunit, the Toyota manual says to press DISC button to change to cd changer, quote from manual: "Push the "DISC" button to play CD. Each time you push the button, the system changes between CD player and the changer of seperate unit if it is equipped" but nothing happens and the current CD just keeps playing.

have you tried when you havent got a cd in the headunit?

yes, without a CD in it goes to the current radio station, pressing the DISC button again has no effect.

thats strange, are you sure you have connected the lit up correctly to your headunit? sounds like the headunit hasnt picked it up??

it does indeed seem like the headunit isn't seeing the iceLink, the only connection to the headunit was to the CD changer socket, there was another plug in the iceLink cable which should connect to the wiring harness but there was nothing to connect it to, the instructions said that it may not be used depending on the configuration of the car, I had a really good look witht the headunit out and there was no spare socket from the harness.

any chance you can post up a picture of the kit that you got?

when I connected my, one wire went from the back of the headunit into the icelink box, and the other from the icelink box into the ipod :s

Hi Zetor, what model and year Corolla do you have? Also, is the pin connector on the back of your head unit 2 rows of 6 pins?

Hi, I bought the Corolla new in January and the model is E12, the CD changer socket does have 2 rows of 6 pins.

On the Denison site, it doesnt list the W58814 as being compatible. However, I just called them direct and they said that providing you have the 2 rows of 6 pins connector, you should be ok.

Was it a pain taking the head unit out to fit? How long did it take? Do you need specialist tools?

although to look at the headunit and all that plastic it does actually come out very easy, it took me 5 mins, the only tools needed are a screwdriver and a 10mm socket and wrench, it will need an extension. Briefly, you take out the ash tray, it just pulls out towards you, then the plastic surround around the gear stick just pops off, (I have the mulitmode gear box) then pull of the center knob that controls the fan speed, there is just one screw to remove then the rest of the plastic facia all just pops off, just be carefull and work your way up, (remove any wires first)a bit of a wiggle and it comes off no problem. You just have the headunit and side vents which is one complete unit left and you will see 4x10mm hex screws facing you, remove these and the whole lot will come out, again just ease it towards you giving it a bit of a wiggle, hope that helps...Forgot to mention, disconnect the Battery first, the radio does not require a code so no probs there.

Sounds straighforward enough. However, I have the climate control so there's no centre know to find a scew underneath! I'll have to take a closer look at it.

I just ordered my Ice Link so should get it on Monday at the latest. Your post helped me a lot. If I end up fitting mine myself, I'll give you a shout if I have any ideas regards the probs you are having.

Yes I would be interested to see how yours goes and if it would help me to get mine working, I thought I had read somewhere on these forums about removal of the climate control, check the pics here: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/gallery/Misc?page=92

No screws mate  !

Just unscrew the gear nob and pull it off, then take out the ashtray and just pull it out - simple  !

oh...so it could of been a faulty icelink kit?

Hi, well that is what I am hoping as I have run out of idea's, btw sorry I didn't see your earlier post on taking some pics, but the wiring was as you described, there is a plug (2x6 pins) that plugged into the head unit cd changer socket which terminated in a black oblong plug, this plugged into the iceLink box and then another cable from the iPod cradle with a round svhs type plug plugged in the other end, when the iPod was connect to the cradle it showned the latest iceLink firmware of V4-4.T1.

My Icelink just arrived today. Seems like a lot of cables just to connect the ipod to my car!

Hopefully it wont be too much of a pain to fit. I'll let you know.

I fitted my Icelink in about 15 mins and got it working perfectly. Only then did I find out that it doesnt use the iPod menu and you cant browse albums or artists without unplugging it and plugging it back in!

Anyhoo, it's going back to Denison and I'm gonna carry on using the Griffin transmitter. It doesnt do a bad job for £20!

Well I am glad to hear that yours worked ok it gives a bit of hope for mine when I get it back although not being able to browse albums and artists is a hassle, your iPod did have the latest firmware on it? I was under the impression that there should still be full control using the iPod menu even when connected unlike the Toyota iPod interface.
