How Many Miles Do You Get From Your Tyres?

I've got a 2002 1.6l Avensis (old shape) that's done 47k miles. It's still on its original Michelin Energy tyres with

at least 4 mm left. I was looking around to change them since there is no way I'm wear them down to legal tread depth before 6 years are up. I know it depends on usage pattern etc .

Should I keep them or change to eg Bridgestone Turanzas or something else

How much mileage have people around here been getting?

25k or thereabouts for fronts on bridgestones for me in a diesel.

michelin are well known for being hard which is why you get better fuel economy but less grip.

On average I get around 15k (driving tyres)

I don't know for the Avensis yet... 47k miles with 4mm left is pretty impressive!

Bear in mind that 1.6mm isn't considered really safe by some groups, but it's the legal minimum.

Some recommend to change tyres at 3mm - so you are only 1mm off.

Not a neccessity, but for drivers like me who bought an Avensis for it's stabilty control, comprehensive suite of air bags, and 5* EuroNCAP safety rating changing at 3mm is on my agenda.

I agree about the tread depth but the majority of drivers drive so close these days that the only way they would stop in time even with brand new performance tyres is with an anchor on 6 foot of chain thrown out of the window.

Stopping tail gating would I beleive have the biggest impact on accidents.

Dads avensis had done 47k on his rear Michelin Energy with about 3mm left he's due to get new ones due to the sidewal becoming heavley cracked. His fronts do about 22k. My avensis has done 16100 miles and has 3mm left on front thats on dunlop sport 3000 the rear are on 6mm.

My Turanza's on the front have just been changed for the second time at about 41k, the rears were done at the same time, but that was the first change.

My company insists that tyres get to 1.6mm before they will allow them to be changed. The tyre fitter measured 1.6 on one side and 2.0 on the other, company initial response was change 1 only! Different brand of tyres too, gone to Pirelli P6000 at company's request. It took some strong language from me on the phone before they changed both fronts!! Grrrrrrrrrrr :ffs:
