Brake Skimming ?!?

My car was bought in may from a toyota main dealer and within a month developed a seized front caliper.

The car had to have new Calipers and pads on the front and the disks were skimmed, all this was done on the 12 month warrenty but should have cost £500

5 months and 3k miles on, the disks were making strange noises and I have been told they need skimming again.

Why would I need to have them skimmed again? They want to charge me £120 to skim the disks. I thought this should be covered under the warrenty as they were only done 5 months ago but apparently its just a wear and tear item so they wont do it under warrenty, I will have to pay for it.

Anyone have any thoughts or words of advice on this.

Thanks

Rob

There is a regularly reported problem with genuine Toyota brakes - specifically so called 'warped' discs causing juddering and similar issues.

This is generally solved by fitting aftermarket (branded) components.

I fitted these recently and I'm really pleased:

(these particular ones don't fit the VVTI but they will be available)

Hi m8, i had a seized front caliper about a month after i purchased my car from arnold clark, ******* ********!!!!!, anyway i got away with getting the calipers refurbished, you got new ones under warranty so even better. I cant see you needing the discs skimmed after such a short mileage, and gazza i replaced my discs and pads with none toyota parts and i still have the same juddery p[roblem with the brakes, my old discs where warped and scored thus the reason for changeing them. Maybe even the avensis has some sort of design fault with there brakes, i was told by replaceing the brakes my problem would go away, its still there and im severly ******, £120 down the pan. If anyone has more info on similar problems please help. Rob i wouldent trust toyota as far as i could throw them, i have had problems in the past and present and wont be going to them again, thay are aware of this brake problem aswell as the vvtis burning oil rapidly they dont care about there customers though, if you have to skim the discs m8 dont bother, as gazz says try another brand and see what happens, and also save yourself some money:].

I had new discs put on about 4 months ago under warranty. This was after the old ones were skimmed nearly a year ago. They argued that I should pay for the pads, but after a quick call to the Motor Trade watchdog (can't recall their official title), a name to quote to the insurance company and a letter to back it up they soon caved in and paid for them.

I have braked every so gently in the last few months and guess what? Yep, in the last week the brakes have been grabbing when braking at slow speeds. My annual milage is about 6000. What are Toyota playing at this is either an awful design or low quality parts.

I have been so very dissappointed with my Avensis, I've only ever had one car with more faults on it and that was a Lada Samara.

This is from a car that has only covered 25,000 miles (fully warranted by Toyota with a service history). I can't wait to leave the Toyota brand and never touch them again with the longest of barge poles!

I had a W plate 1.8 GS as a hire car for about 6 months a while back, did about 10k miles on it with no brake issues at all, and I wasn't especially gentle with the brakes either. Maybe its just a 'luck of the draw' thing?

Think the brakes are a common problem though m8, aswell as multiple other probems with the avensis, i suppose it is just your luck though, im at the end of my teather with mine, got a few problems, already fixed a few, money money money, worst car i have owned:].
