Only had my T180 for 6 days now but was suprised to receive a TMC alert whilst driving along the motorway. Is this free? Used to have (well still got) TomTom 5 on my PDA and am sure you had to pay extra for TMC.

I was in navigation mode (set a destination and was being guided).

The alert came as a voice message. It went something like ' Attention, congestion in 1 mile', 'Attention, lane closed in one mile' (2 seperate instances) or something like that. Once, I did notice on the screen a message asking me if I wanted to re-route around the congestion, which I declined. All pretty good, if it's free, which I am presuming it is.

I'm always getting them. It's all in the SATNAV manual. Not sure where any fees come into it. It does tend to be fairly accurate when you get them.

Thank you SYWY for info I will watch for it now.

The point I was making is if the traffic info comes to the satellite via the RDS radio the radio would have to be on

I am not sure if Toyota can directly transmit data via the gps satellites I read somewhere that some of the other GPS manufactures are starting to transmit up to date info to the GPS (via satellite I believe )making map updates live and ultimately spefic to ypur location hence the question "does radio need to be on "

Thanks again

I woild like to add the following to above post. If the traffic data is transmitted on the RDS radio as I suspect for use with the sat nav, the radio would need to have two tuners one for normal radio and the other to listen for RDS-TMC data otherwise the radio would need to be switched on and tuned to a station supporting RDS=TMC. Can anyone confirm that TMC data is received with the RDS radio switched off , as I have never received a TMC message.

Thanks

Confirmed....

I have the full screen nav, which picks up the TMC info from the data on the back of Classic FM. If the radio is turned off, then i get no TMC messages or icons. It has two tuners and tmc still works while listening to CD's etc.

Note I think that Classic FM is the only UK station that carries TMC data, so if the reception on that station drops out you will lose TMC.

Regards

Steve.

Thanks for reply Steve

The system would be much better with two tuners one selectable by user to any radio station while the second tuner monitors ClassicFM station for RDS-TMC data This would also mean that the user when switching off the radio would only switch off the general radio tuner leaving the second tuner still running for RDS-TMC data. I will be in England shortly and will experiment with the TMC data

thanks again.

Can we not edit thread titles here?

Anyway, I must say I'm rather disappoited with the satnav. It was half term last week, and we went to the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, and to West Midlands Safari Park. On both occasions the satnav did not know where they were. I had to use my PDA/TomTom to get me there. Also, am I right that you can't put a full post code into the Toyota satnav? Or am I using it wrong!!

Yes you are correct only takes 5 digits (not seven) after that you have to list streets .

I had a garmin 2620 unit and the maps were much more up to date than my (2 month old ) T180 unit

also i have tried in a different thread to find out how you know when new map updates are available for Toyota sat nav without success
