I have a 96 1.6P with 190K, in Dublin the best I can find for middle the road motor oil is Vavoline 10-40w semi sync €80 which works out at about £54. Becuase of weight I dont think buying it on the net would be cost affective but would appreciate any online links to have a look see

Cheers Cubix

10 W 40 semi-synth can be bought over the counter at any Motor Factor. I use MOTOQUIP oil which costs about £10 for 5 lt.

How much are they selling for that price????

Anywere between €20-25 which works out at about £14-17. From searching around it seems that the standard ACEA is the one that decent motor oil companies grade their oil by and A3 for semi sync, would this be correct. I do an oil change about every 6-8wks and the car runs about 7-8hrs a day 5days a week (taxi). Is the damage/break down of oils done with a lot of cold starts or a mixture of everything. Also do you use a spurious oil filter or a toyota genuine one

I can't really offer any definative advice regarding oil types etc. But I found this:

http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html

The ONLY genuine part which I insist on is the Oil filter. But to be honest this is only because I think that I will get a better re-sale price. Parts like these are generally manufactured on behalf of Car manufacturers and will be identical to those packaged and branded as copies. But which are identical to the genuine Toyota ones I think we will never know!!

If you do that many oil changes will Mr T not give you a discount if you buy half a dozen filters at once?

Cheers Gazza  Any idea who makes Bardhall SoHappy? When I rang consort Artane they quoted me €6 for a spurious and €9 for a genuine oil filter. Nice to hear your one doesnt burn any oil as this one is going through about a ltr every 6k. Bought it second hand, was surprised when it started burning oil as I dont drive hard and my last carina-e 1.6 had 270k and was only burning about half that amount. Either way great car for the job just a shame the previous owner didnt look after it

Hey

I use Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w40 27 euro (but always get a few euro off) and always use a genuine filter. My carina has 170000 miles on the clock and does not burn a drop (less than a liter between changes) I change the oil and filter every 5000 miles and also before changing the oil I use engine flush from Redex or Wynns. I drive the car hard in terms of acceleration and hit the rev limiter occasionally but the main thing is to service it on time, I have heard that if u extend the oil changes it will not be long before it will start burning oil.
