Picking My St185 Up Tommorow

I am soo excited... loved my ST182, but it was lacking the umphh that i wanted out of a car, and the 185 was £5 deared to insure this year , so why not. Reading some past posts i have read that the BHP figure for the celica GT4 at the wheels is somewhere in the region of 130 -140 bhp?.. is this true. Hoping i am not going to feel cheated too much , didnt expect it to that low. It will be faster than the st182 must be,

It has a 2.5 inch S/S exhasut with De-CAT, new clutch, dizzy , rad and a few other things.

I have ordered the S1 parts from fensport for it, what kinda gains u reckon i will get, its a fuel cut defensor, bleed valve, panel filter and a set of better sparks... they reckon 35 bhp with the exhaust which is a moongoose they say it will be 45 to 50 bhp?... what do you guys reckon

I am fitting a HQS metal HG aswell and some HQS valve lifters, so should be able to up the boost a little, any suggestions as to how much?

I cant wait, love the bonnet scoop and pop up headlights, love them.. B) :yahoo:

The 185 is my fav by far! Had 2 182's as i loved them to bits but couldnt find a decent 185 at the time i was looking and ended up with a MR2 turbo instead.

They are supposed to have 200bhp at the fly so take off about 25% (rough estimate) and your looking at about 150bhp at the wheels.

The boost you should be able to raise to about 16Psi i would have thought with the setup you have mentioned without haveing any major problems. :)

Enjoy and keep us updated bud... Daktari should be along soon enough with a LOT more info im sure. :)

welcome to the GT4 Fold car.

Hate to mention it but why do you feel the need to fit a fuel cut defender, the fuel cut on gt4 ecu's is set for the boost at which the ecu map ends so going outside this is dangerous for you engine in terms of fueling. Also I would avoid using a bleed valve get a proper granger/relief valve if you want a mechnical boost controller which can be had for all of about £20.

As for the boost you can run with the 185 it all depends which ecu you have the later ones had fuelling for up to 17psi but the early ones only went up to about 12/13psi. Also the CT26 turbo will definately be blowing hot air about about 14psi, it's nowhere near a effeicent as the CT20 on the 205.

Also how come you putting a mongoose system on if it's already got a 2.5" ss system??

Not having a go, just don't like seeing people pay out for stuff they don't need...

thankyou for the advice, firstly i know totally nothing about these, i am learning and fast.

As for fuel cut defender and bleed valve thingy , its a pack that fensport sell as their stage 1 pack, also i wont be changing the exhaust , meant to say Fensport advise stage 2 is adding the exhasut which it already has.

So in a word , dont bother with the fuel cut defender thingy. Am i best going for an electronic boost controller? I just have some spare money once the HG has been done and its my birthday so next week so i am treeating myself..

Please if you have any suggestions as to where to start with mods, please let me know.. thanxxxx

Electronic boost controller is on my list 'to buy' :D

Should go very well with the boost a little higher, I'm not too sure about the 185 but dont think you can run quite a higher boost as the 205.

IIRC you lose around 50 BHP through the transmission on a 185 (a rough guide) so you are looking at around 150 at the wheels, and yes it WILL feel faster than your 182 :D

Congrats on the buy and welcome to the 3SGTE! :yahoo: B)

Yea a EBC would be better if it's a normal 185 the one with the scoop on th bonnet similar to a scoobypoo impreza then keep the boost down around the 11/12psi mark.

If it's an RC/CS it has a chargecooler and bonnet like our 205's with a big hole above the turbo. These came with the higher mapped ecu and with the stock ct26 should be able to cope with around 14/15psi.

Also think about getting yourself some aftermarket gauges I've got Boost, oil pressure and oil temperature. But would recommend boost as a minimum before doing any mods.

its not an RC or carlos sainz, is the matrix on top of the engine not a charge cooler or is this an intercooler, i think i need to start reading up on this....

Yea the one with the radiator looking thing on top of the engine is the air to air intercooler, the RC/CS have chargecoolers which work a bit better.

Keep the boost under 12 psi for now and think about upgrading to an fmic etc. Have a word with dak re mods for 185's he point you in the right direction.

Congrats on getting the 185 matey. Best move you could make. Mods??/ Well start slow and work up is the best way. As has already been mentioned the stock engine will give you 140 - 150 at the wheels. Doesn`t sound a huge amount but you have to remember you`ve got all four wheels working for you and that`s a big advantage. It`s probably worth another 50BHP in real world usage. While charlie chav is spinning his front wheels you`ll be halfway up the road. So any mod is going to increase this advantage. :D

Things to remember. Newtons 3rd law. To every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. Put into english, if you`re going to make it quicker make sure you can stop it as quickly. One of the first things i`d do is sort the brakes. They`re a bit wooden and if you`ve got cheap pads in they`ll fade faster than a red Nissan. Decent pads and a fluid change will give you a lot more bite. If you can afford it go for something like Tarox grooved discs on the front. You don`t need to worry about the rear discs.

Engine mods. keep the boost standard to start with and get the induction sorted out. A good quality panel filter will suffice. An engine service will make the car feel better too. Good quality mineral or semi synth oil is good enough if you change it every 3K. Genuine Toyota filter only. The standard platignum plugs are good for 60K and are perfectly adequate. Check out the dizzy cap, if it looks a bit cacky get a new one and a rotor arm as well. Plug leads are pretty long lasting but check that they aren`t brittle or the ends have corroded where they go into the dizzy and also check the lead from the dizzy to the coil/igniter.

Boost controllers. A granger valve will be the minimum you require to increase boost. Don`t get a bleed valve. if you can run to it get an EBC. You can then control the boost from inside the car Much easier to use once you`ve got them set up. Obviously you`ll need a Boost gauge as well. You don`t need to take the boost above 1BAR because as stated the CT26 is not that effective above that unless you`ve got a few more mods to support it. Most ST185 peeps run them at .9BAR Max. That way you get about a 20BHP hike and keep the reliability.

Once you`ve got the basics covered and you`ve got used to it or bored  then you can have a play with other bits. Decat, FMIC, water cooling, Bigger tubbies, But initialy you really need to get to know the car and take it from there. Good luck with it and if you need any info you know where we are.
