Whining From Engine At 1500rpm

I've had a whine coming from the engine when the revs get to about 1500rpm regardless of which gear etc.

I reported this to the main dealer when it had it's 60,000 service. They said the problem was the timing belt that needed changing.

I didn't get them to change the belt at the service and had a local garage do instead (much cheaper too). The local garage has been servicing my families car's now for approx the last 20 years and never had any complaints at all about them.

Then in September when I was going the USA for 2weeks, I booked the Rav into the main dealers for them to babysit it whilst I was away (and also sort out the whine too).

They emailed me in the states, saying that the timing belt needed changing. So I emailed them back saying it has already been done. They responded that as it wasn't a Toyota belt, it was this that was causing the noise.

When I got back the UK, I went in and they were so blinkered and couldn't see my point that:-

1: The noise was present with old Toyota timing belt fitted.

2: The noise was still present with the new non-Toyota timing belt fitted

therefore, the belt isn't causing the noise.

Eventually I got it booked in for Monday 23rd Oct, basically the only way I could get them to sort it out was to offer to pay for a Toyota timing belt...

Anyway, just been to pick up the Rav and the noise has disappeared. The fault was not the timing belt (I love it when I'm right! :D ) but was the Turbo unit which they replaced.

Boy am I glad that I took out the extended warranty at £46 per month - at least that saved me the best part of £1500!!!!

Phil.
