Rav D4d Flywheel Isues

 Hello fellow Toyota fans.I've been reading other Rav 4 D4D posts regarding dual mass flywheel issues and in particular how the dealers and Toyota have been handling it,

My own 2003 GX model with 30k on has just had its flywheel and clutch replaced, but it wasn,t very straight forward.

My local dealer Inchcape in Derby were extremely unhelpful and have had issues on a couple of occasions previously.

They wanted to charge me £726 to remove the gearbox and diagnose the problem and then couldn't guarantee if it was a warrantable repair.

I had used Ron Brookes in Ilkeston for its 1st service and was extremely helpful.I took a chance and drove up to them and asked them to drive my car and diagnose the problem.

The service manager drove it,confirmed what i' already knew and said that he'd make a call.

Within 20 mins the car was booked in and within 2 days the car was sorted. It also had an ECU upgrade and i had a 40 k service although it s not due till Jan.

I'm extremely delighted with this dealer and nothing is too much trouble. As i work within the motor trade,i know what to expect and what can be done,so am a little cautious when i have to take a car in for any work. That is why i bought a Toyota, mainly due to their reliability and customer service.

What a transformation!she is now a fabulous car to drive once again, smooth and responsive with no more vibrations.

Hi Stoo there are so many reports of dual mass flywheel failure varying from complete loss of drive to vibrations, can you describe when, in you ravs case the vibratuions tooe place, what gear etc. I have a rav d4d on a 52 plate with 51k on the clock which vibrates in 5th when acclerating and decelerating. RRG Altrincham dont think there is a problem, warranty is rapidly running out so any advice would be greatfully recieved.

Hi Stoo,

Good to hear you have found a dealer you are happy with  , i'm an ex-mechanic of 18 years in the trade, and i to was very worried about using the Toyota main dealer network :( , lucky for me i found a great one second time round, first was Jemica Sidcup (very poor customer service ), yet Toyota Beadles ,Aylsford Maidstone are simply as good as it gets, polite ,efficient, quality workmanship, all that you should expect from any main agent :) .

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum, I'm usually on IMOC and am a multiple Mk1 Mr2 owner.

My work colleage has a problem with her Rav 4 diesel, with the fly wheel, hence my reply on this thread.

She emailed me the following earlier, would anyone be able to shed a bit of light on this? £1500 for a Flywheel sounds expensive to me!

"Well I've finally had the verdict on my car..................I need a new fly wheel and Toyota want to charge me £1500 for it and I don't think that includes the labour although I'm not 100% coz they weren't very clear.

If you have any spare time could you have a look at where ever it is you get your parts from for a fly wheel for a 2001 Rav 4, 5 door, Diesel. I need to get a rough idea of how much one costs. "

I've got my friendly mechanic looking at it tomorrow, but any help would be appreciated!

Hello Charged,i was like many other diesel Rav owners experiencing flywheel problems. How many miles has it done?does it have FTSH?Has this dealer enjoyed your friends business previously and has she owned the car from new?

The only issue he/she may encounter is that its a 5yr oldcar.I'm sure a sympathetic dealer would advise accordingly.

Let us know how you get on.

Good to hear that Ron Brookes is a decent dealer. I bought mine from there, even though the're not my local dealer. They gave me the best deal out the 4 that I tried.

I've been reading these flywheel threads with interest and have, with the benefit of that wonderfully exact science of hindsight, come to the conclusion that I should have looked at this forum BEFORE buying my RAV!

Can anyone tell me if this problem was resolved in the 53 model and if not, what should I look out for?*

I've had mine for 2 weeks and it has done 38k (1k by me). I have a 12 month warranty on it from the local dealership. Would it be worth me getting an independant garage (I have a reasonably competant one right next door to my house!) to look at it before said warranty expires?

*I've noticed some gear stick vibration at certain revs, and it can be stubborn to get into reverse occasionally.*
