Question: "any Disadvantages Of The Mr Drivetrain?

I was wondering, are there any disadvantages to having an MR, mid-shipped drivetrain? I have seen a few pictures of MR2s with the rear hood open, and access to the parts seemed limited.

Its probably a dumb ques., but I am curious. I am serious about buying one, and plan to modify it. Some cars, if they're too difficult to work on, you'll get charged more by mechanics.

So, is it more difficult to access a mid-shipped engine, than an engine in the front?

BTW: Any tips on buying and maintaining them would help. THX.

Well the engine bay is that much harder to access since it is boxed in, and on the Turbo's the engine pretty much fills the engine bay, leaving little room to work. In many cases it is neccessary to partially drop the engine out of the car - or at least dropping the engine will make a job easier - changing the cambelt is one such instance.

But the advantage is a perfect weight distribution and therefore (in theory at least) better handling :)

MR2's are hard to work on as you dont have the space like in the front engined car.

But it is worth it when you throw her round the corners... I'm never going back to a front engined car, when the nose dives as you brake... NEVER!

I have to agree with Jappybeast, because of the mid engine layout, the MR2's are harder to work on than conventional front engined cars, where you can simply lean over. The parts I uaually want to access are somewhat buried beneath a maze of piping etc. The restricted room and often difficult access points make it somewhat more of a challenge - fun though :) if not occasionally frustrating
