The Aygo doesn't have an alarm, just an immobiliser - or so I thought!

The immobiliser will be switched on/off only by putting a correctly coded transponder key into the ignition. That is, you can't just have a key that is ct the same as the real one, it has to have the correct coil in it.

No. I meant it was a Toyota Approved Thatcham Alarm System( Thatcham 1+2), that was sold as an EXTRA by the dealer I bought my Aygo from.

It was also installed to Thatcham standards and came with a certificate.

It cost me £300.00.

The message I'm trying to get across to those who seem to be unsure about the nature of this this post is that although the car is relatively safe from being driven away by a thief, it is however, a 'doddle' to gain access into the Aygo to steal all your belongings, without so much as leaving a physical trace of a 'break in', thus rendering the car an easier car to 'target', for toe rags in the know.

That is a shockingly low level of security if access can be gained that easily! :o

My wife has aygo black. can someone in the know PM me with the method these scrots are using so maybe i can prevent it.

also is the 5 door more at risk (please don't say yes as it has more doors) i mean are the back doors just as secure as the fronts???

Posted

I know there are pros and cons to this train of thought but I am still of the opinion that if someone who knows what this weakness is could pm it to me and I then send it out to concerned owners on here it would be a good idea.

Just discovered this worrying fact this morning when I went to start my Aygo, that 'scroates' had managed to open the driver's door, activating the alarm and allowing them entry to steal worthless copies of CD's and and a gym bag (in the boot), without so much of a scratch anywhere!!

A friend in the 'know'... he's a mechanic not a thief..btw...lol, tells me that alarmed or not thieves can open the door quite easily without so much as smashing any glass or damaging any locks.! He explained how but I'm not going to reveal ! :o

Anyway, I thought all you Aygo owners ought to know! :(

After a test drive of the Aygo I noticed the key wasn’t like the usual Toyota kind. The dealer said “That’s because basically it’s a Peugeot”

I was also put of by it not having deadlocks, a must have feature nowadays.

Looking at the Thatcham web site, the Aygo only has a 1 star rating (out of 5) for ‘Theft From’... The lowest rating

Surprisingly the ‘New’ Yaris only has a 2 star rating compared to a 4 star on the T Sport Yaris! (5 out of 5 of Theft Of, Another reason why I want to keep my T Sport!)

Can someone please PM me with the details of this loophole?

Worrying stuff :(

This thread is developing into a witch hunt. Everyone with an Aygo is worried but no-one is either posting the weakness or PM'ing worried members. I'm looking at getting a strongbox for the boot, as i can't empty the car every time i leave it.

I sort of accept that it's not going to be a fortress of a car for £6k but am worried that it's something glaringly obvious or a defect? :)

Plus I wonder if it's anything than can be rectified with an aftermarket product or something

:help:

I don't know about calling it a 'witch hunt' , but I can understand people's caution about giving away too much information on a high profile public forum.

On one hand it's something you'd like improved, on the other it's something you don't particularly want many people knowing.

I appreciate Feldman's comment that maybe it could be rectified with something aftermarket, but that's really for Toyota to sort out - it shoudn't be down to the owners to beef up a security loophole.

All I can suggest is for all the Aygo owners on here to contact their dealers and basically pressure Toyota into action. There is a security concern, of this we have no doubt. It doesn't matter what it is- or how it works.......the fact that the car isn't securable is something Toyota should know about and deal with.

So I go to mr.T and say "my car isn't secure, please fix it"...

I think they'll say "waddayamean?"

And then I respond with "well, I don't know really, but it's on a forum

on the internet, and you know, when it's on the internet it must be true"...

Somehow I get a feeling that this is nog going to work...

I must confess that I AM really curious now as to the extent of

this car "not being secure", so if someone DOES send out PM's,

please do me one too, so I can secure my Aygo myself...

Got to agree with Jan van de Wouw, if we could go to the dealer with the problem, and state this is how easy it is to break in. Then Mr T would have to sort it rather than look silly at the dealer saying 'on this forum it says'. PM please, anyone who knows how to get into the car without a key or a 'brick', please

Posted

fair point, but conversely the dealer may well be aware of the problem.

As stated in the original post in this thread, a mechanic ( not Toyota specific ) knew how to do it. Any security loophole like this is usually known by the breakdown services ( AA, RAC etc ) for the callouts where the keys are locked in the car. If it's fairly common knowledge in the motor trade then Toyota will definitely be aware of it - although they may not be too keen to let on.

Any Aygo owners in Teesside - Feel free to pop round my house......I'll figure out the problem pretty damn quick.

EDIT......... Toyota will definitely know there is a weakness here. This isn't a 'chinese whispers' situation - this was highlighted in a report by Which?, the consumer group people.

News item

You could go to your dealer armed with this knowledge and ask what measures Toyota are taking to rectify the situation. As stated before it doesn't matter how it's done - but it matters that it can be done.......in 3 seconds.

I wonder how many owners would have thought twice about the purchase if this was known beforehand?

I heard today that one of my work colleagues who owns a 3 door Peugeuot 107(Aygo clone), had all her contents in her car boot, including Christmas shopping cleared out, again without so much as a trace of a break in - last night. Could this be a start of a worrying trend!? :help:

Unfortunately, her car isn't alarmed so it didn't attract the public's attention when it was being broken into.

They must have gained entry via the front driver's door and then pushed down one of the rear seats to get access into the boot's contents.

For those that have asked the question, "Is 3 doors safer than 5, etc", the answer seems a definite "NO".

I wonder how soon before the insurance companies cotton on that these cars are relatively 'unsafe' to insure , and that it's 'enviable' GP 1 insurance catorgory, will nolonger be the case??

I hope I'm not being accused of 'scaremongering' other Aygo owners, but it seems like we do have a problem here folks and what has happend to my Aygo, is not an 'isolated' case.

I think, putting it into context, if you leave valuables in any car you are asking for trouble.

Whether it's some kind of trick break-in or just a brick through the window, your stuff could be nicked.

Paul.

I was told by my Toyota dealer that you press once on key fob to lock the car and twice to deadlock. He said that the only way they could get in with the deadlock on, was to smash a window!

I was told the same.

Also, I thought I might have guessed the loophole this morning when I was opening one of the rear doors- it would still be possible on the 3-door as the rear windows are the same irrespective of how many doors you have.

Still hoping to receive a PM from someone so I can

A- Shop for something to solve the problem (if possible)

B- Speak with Toyota to see what they're willing to do.

I accept that a £6000 car is not going to be Fort Knox. As such the only things left in my car are a couple of A to Z's, a bottle of oil, a bottle of screenwash, some copied CD's in a CD wallet and a de-mister pad. Doesn't mean I'm happy to have some soap-dodging cretin getting into my car just on the offchance :censor:

Granted. Any car can be broken into if a thief finds the opportunity to do so whether it's an Aygo or a 5 star Thatcham Rated 'Safe' car..........

What is worrying for us Aygo et al owners, is that you are going to have a 'difficult' time justifying a ' break in' to insurers, if like in my situation, there was no evidence of a break in other than my belongings were missing.

Catch my drift!?

It would be so much easier if they had a task to break into the Aygo, and therefore had no choice but to put a brick into the window to get access.

At least the security design flaw was not an issue. TOYOTA PEOPLE TAKE NOTE.

With regards to Deadlocking on the Aygo? A quick phone call to my mechanic mate reassures me, "IT AIN'T DEADLOCKED!" :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The worst thing about all of this is the time it takes to get in. If someone walks upto a car and enters it within a few seconds then nobody will give it a second thought - it takes that long with a key ! If they are fumbling around for 30-40 seconds then there's more chance of somebody noticing the suspicious character .

Sounds disturbing to say the least - is there a way to prevent this?

no offence but its called a garage ... or a drive at least, had my aygo 2months, no bodys batted an eye lid, ive got CD's, Mobile phone usually in there ( for many reasons main being, if the car gets nicked they can trace the phone ) money in the tray behind the handbrake, get tinted windows, no one bothers with you then cuz they cant see the sat-navs or the phones, better idea,

TAKE THE SAT NAV OUT

thats probably the reason you got targeted, no offence again, i think people who leave sat nav in there car SHOULDNT complain when it goes missing.

No offence taken. My Aygo is always garaged overnight and, during the day, I never leave much on display (no sat nav) - I am considering the glove box lid though to increase hiding places if the need arises.

A copper advised me that any car can be broken into but no one would drive it away without the key fob.

Had my car alarm installed now. Cat 1 Autowatch alarm that uses the existing keyfob. Alarms when the the doors, boot, and bonnet are opened without disarming and has sensors inside. Even when they cut the Battery leads it keeps sounding. If you do goto the precaution of having an alarm fitted like me make them aware that to install a boot switch it will need to be a reed switch as there isn't much of a lip on the boot being all glass an-all. The engineer had to come back to install that on mine. Now my Aygo's is all secure. Without pressing the keyfob the alarm will sound now.

Hi Aygo owners

I now have the details on the shortcomings of the Aygo security system. I tried to bring it to the attention of the technical department, but the guy I spoke to got very shirty and wouldn't hear of any criticism of the Aygo. He said there had been no complaints and no dealers where reporting any dissatisfaction from the owners. So, if you want something done you are going to have to make a fuss. Possibly even a TV motoring program or national newspaper. Phone customer relations and let them know of your losses. If you PM me with your chassis number and model code so I can check you are genuine owners, I will PM back with the details. Regards Ray
