Hi all

I think this is my first posting on this forum (so be gentle)

and I am not a criminal , just been in the car trade a long time

I was also a car valeter for a large auction , alarms , immobilisers

deadlocks , were all a problem when you have cars with flat battery's

but all overcome

Car alarms (in their present form) are now almost obsolete

any one hearing a car alarm , see (or hear) it as a nuisance

70 % of thefts from cars are drug related , who in their right mind

is going to challenge someone who is desperate for their next "fix"

certainly not a passer by ,

to deactivate the very best car alarm , trigger the alarm (any way)

monday morning 3.00am wait 20 mins , do it again every 20 mins

untill the alarm is deactivated (it will be)

Immobilisers are good , it means your car is usually safe as long as

the theif hasn't a low loader or a removals truck , an old trick

is to print a fake baliffs order , no one challenges that , as credit defaults

are running high at the moment , (this won't happen with the cheaper end

of the market , like the cheapest toyota) as it still costs money to ring a car

ie change chassis number , clone key tag chip

ultrasonic sensors usually only detect glass breaking (high frequency)

dead locks won't stop a window break

reed switches are over come with a fridge magnet strip pressed into gap (3 ft long strip)

all this is common knowledge

the best defense is to have nothing in the car worth nicking , but have any thing

of zero value in plain view , take that cd's , the four seasons etc , hide any valubles

in a old pitza box

the second best defense is to hide anything , ie strong box bolted down

out of view

third best , windows tints , they are intimidating to a potental thief as they can't

see if someone inside , but now sadly some tints are now illegal

fourth , but very good , baby seat , with bottle (optional nappy bag) no

car thief goes there

just some ideas

the latest cat 3 total closure alarm may impress your insurance company

but the local junkie if he see's ur sat nav will be off with it , before you can say

no claims bonus

all this and no mention of the nife

hopefully the aygo problem will not get to the media

the thatcham site is a good site for car thiefs

just a thought (I don't have many)

my cheapo aygo hasn't got an alarm , so im wiring a horn thru a relay to the int light

with a switch hidden under the car to disarm the relay (with the horn inside the car)

sledgehammeruk

ps anyone got a cure for this please pm me

as I love my aygo basic

Ironically enough, there's a guy in the Avensis section who's just had his window smashed and the baby seat stolen.

People are scum !

Hi all

sorry to hear about the broken window :censor:

so 2 nappy bags & 1 bottle

old pitza box as backup

just show's in reality all cars are just as vunreble

as each other

there are some sick :censor: out there

mind you , child seats now not an option

if you have up to 11 year old's

also boosters will be the same

so easier to sell

big hungry dog is the only good answer so far

Merry Christmas

sledgehammer :toast:

this may sound pesamistic but if its gonna get broken into it will, alarms an all, my only bit of advice, everyone says keep valuables out of view (obvious and totally agree with) but dont forget the items that are valuable to YOU, I knew some who are their thier battered old car stolen, she didnt care about car but her portfolio of 2 years worth of college work was innit (useless to robber I should think) but it was weeks away from being submitted, she got extention but had to do all work again, ended with depression :crybaby: because of all the stress, think this would apply to other bits too valuable photos etc. Anyway thats my two pennies.

Just been reading over this thread and am rather saddened by it all, my own thoughts as an ex-mechanic is the Aygo and sisters cars a built on a tight budget, and Toyota have had to go with the majority of its french partners on vehicle security, i feel sure if Toyota had built a small car ( in house ) it would of had much better security and would have cost much more to buy ;) .

Toyota GB is the first place to start complaining to ,and in large numbers!, then it crossed my mine that all cars have to pass the Thatcham test to get an insurance rated group, so had a look on their web site and it made rather poor reading ... pity Toyota didn't publicise thatcham's finding in the sales brochures........theft from vehicle .....1 star :( .

Once on the site below ,tap in your Aygo details.........

This thread worries me as a soon to be Aygo owner.

If anyone has knowledge of the security flaw, PLEASE pm me - cheers!

I can only say ditto. As I'm fairly new to this i hadn't spotted this thread so thanks for bringing it back to the top! Would love to know anything that can be easily done about it apart from investing in a pizza box! :D

Leave your dog in the car whenever possible (!)

Bob, I don't think you can blame the French partners for the security without having facts of who exactly signed off the approval for the security system. It does amaze me how when you read through the forum any positive point must be Toyota and negatives were caused by Citroen/Peugeot!

Robby88 don't worry, just follow standard advice (as given in many paces in the thread) and don't leave stuff on display and take whatever is valuable to you out of the car when you leave it.

Well double pressing the lock button does do something, dead lock it apparently, so I have been doing that

There are no dead locks on the Aygo hence only receiving 1 star for ‘Theft From’ on the Thatcham Security Ratings.

Sit in your car and lock it with the remote then open the doors to find out.

For a brand new model the security from an international company like Toyota is p1$$ poor.

One press of the button locks the car. Any subsequent presses of the button flash the indicators to help you locate the car in a car park and that's all it does. If you want to confirm it, sit in the car and press the button twice then try pulling up the lock button on the door and opening the door. It will open. If it had deadlocks it wouldn't.

I do agree that the security should be better especially as the car is designed tobe used in town where it is more at risk from being broken into.

LOL.........................I will have a pint of whatever he has been drinking

Bearing in mind that the Aygo scores a 4 for being pinched then all you need to do to reduce the chance of it being broken into is not to leave anything of value in clear view/on display when the car is parked up.

Having said that, if the car is that easy to get into without the need to break anything then, at least, if the worst does happen, you will not have to pay out and have the inconvenience of needing windows replaced.

Really? Well I never knew that. I wonder how they do it?

Let me think....

Guys was thinking of getting an AYGO but read this thread and was worried.

However, checked my other car (an MX5) and it gets one star too - so all things are relative.

Posted

The new MX5 has a 5 star rating (the highest score = the highest security) of ‘Theft Of’ and a 4 star rating of ‘Theft From’. Can’t get any better really.

It gets a 3 and a 1 star respectively on the 1990- 2001 models.

I think the point is that for a new city car, the Aygo has a very poor security rating. Other manufactures have improved with their new models; the MX5 is a prime example.

I’ve also noticed that the majority of new cars get at least a 4 star rating for theft of (engine immobilisers), deadlocks and a factory fitted alarm gets it a 5 star.

Deadlocks are a MUST HAVE on any new car nowadays. I know they are trying to cut costs but the costs are then passed on to the owners with insurance and repairs from break-ins.

yeah that's what I have a 1998 model

Hi

In response to all those that have IM'd regarding details about how theives got into my Aygo, I am not at liberty to give exact details especially in a public forum such as this one, as the info could be open to abuse-SORRY!

I've since sold my Aygo for a different make which offers a lot better protection against thieves- hopefully :)

Only clues I can give is that the Aygo is definitely not deadlocked and that the locks are not 'shielded'. You can mention that to your local dealer. They should know what this is meant if they are worth the weight in gold!
