Hid Kits For Gen 6?

Hello,

With the dark evenings upon us, it's time I got the Celica's lights sorted out. The side and main beam will remain unchanged as they are fine, but I was wondering if anyone has replaced the dipped beam with HID bulbs?

Any testimonials of kits from hids4u.com (for example).

I upgraded mine to 85W xenon filled ones. (100W in the mains) They are much better and very cheap, got 6 bulbs off eBay for £15. Still not like true HID though.

Xenon's on the Drivers side, standard on the passengers. Remember it is daylight.

everone is always complaining about the headlights on celicas. mine came with uprated bulbs (really bright white) and they seem fine :)

i say try a new set of good bulbs before spending loads on HIDs, gotta be worth a try

ian at 'toyauto centre' gets these kits from time to time. think they are usaly about £250 incl ballasts and bulbs, real plug'n'play. think you can pick what temp bulbs you want (temp relates to colour. white to violet)

I've just ordered a set of hids for the dipped beam, I'll let you know how I get on when they arrive - with photos!

Nice, how much did they cost?? Where did you get them from?

I've tried three lots of bulbs now and they are all pretty poor. I've tested the voltage at the lights which is fine, and the direction is setup correctly. Main beam is excellent - dip is terrible. My 36 year old landrover has better head lights.

The only way I know of improving them is to put main beam bulbs in the dipped lights (which I was told would fit??) But I haven't done that due to not wanting to blind people.

Strangely, the manual says dipped is 55W and main is 65W, i.e. not a whole lot of difference, I would have expected main to be more like 85W.

The kit I bought was off eBay, £74.99 :) + £20 P&P

The difference in power should not be much, the difference comes from the angle they point in and the fact that dipped bulbs have the front masked (usually grey enamal or similar) whilst the mains are totally clear.

I just got my kit this morning and installed it this evening (in the dark). It's the best modification I've made so far!! (ok, its the only modification I've made so far). The difference between the old bulbs and the HIDs is like night and day! Fitting the kit was simplicity in itself, less than half an hour.

I now have two problems though:

(1) the dipped beam has never been high enough - I decided to wait until I fitted the HIDs to see how much adjustment was needed. How do I raise the beam? There is a hex nut on the back of the headlight unit, which I adjusted, but it didn't seem to have any effect.

(2) the main beam, which I thought was fine, is now very yellow compared to the dipped HIDs, so I'm just going to get some better bulbs from Halfords for those.

A highly recommended modification, well worth the money!

im guessing this is the one?

That's the one, specify bulb type 9006 (HB4) & bulb colour 6000k for the dipped on the Gen 6. The seller has numerous auctions running (check )http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/xenon.lights.direct).

They are available for the main beam too, but I was worried about the switch-on time delay when the lights are cold (they take a second or two to warm up) and they may not be as good at flashing as the filament bulbs.

I worked out how to raise the lights: there are two hex nuts on the back of the light unit. The metal one at the top adjusts the light from left to right (like most things in life, it takes a lot of !Removed! before anything happens). The plastic one at the bottom of the light unit will adjust the height of the beam, screw it anti-clockwise to raise the beam. The one at the passenger side is difficult to get at, I used a pocket-sized ratchet wrench.

Some pics, showing the standard candle on the left and HID on the right (obviously! )

Both done: I got some high-brightness bulbs in Halfords for the main beam (they were BOGOF), but they still look yellow compared to the HIDs:

After dark - what a difference it makes! No need to use main beam anymore. :yahoo:

This is probably a really bone question, but are these compatible with projector lights too?

Have never been sure if the projector lights use the same bulbs etc, but just a different reflector design?

What's in the box:

bulbs, ballasts, mounting brackets, adhesive mounting pads, cable ties and all connectors necessary for plug + play.
