Oil Consumption

Whilst checking the RAV over the weekend noticed the oil level right down to minimum  . I reckon that since I got it in March this year (it's now done 9500 miles ) it must have used 1 liter of oil. Quite suprised by this as all my previous cars never used any oil. Car runs great apart from this and returns nearly 40mpg, is this oil consumption normal or should I mention it when it goes in for its first service?

I wouldn't be too concerned at this stage. It will have synthetic based oil that tends to cling to cylinder walls in a well bedded engine let alone a new one. You may well find that a lot of the consumption took place in the first couple of thousand miles and it has already started to settle.

You are due an oil change at 10000 so you can keep an eye on it after that and see what it is now doing.

As far as Toyota are concerned, I think you will find that it is well within their recommendations but you can see what they say.

Mine has done 1300 miles and I will change the oil at 1500 then every 7500 or 12 months whichever comes first (if unforseen problems don't prevent me from keeping it that long). It's a bit old fashioned but I would rather stay on the right side. If I detect any abnormal consumption, I will report back.

Regards
