A mate of ours as just phoned me to say he as been banned from another forum, because of something he put in a private message. The admin team opened it and read it

My question is can/do our admin team open/read our pm's?

We know thats what as happen cos the pm was sent to me

Yes they can.

Even your password encrypted into the database can be found out by someone with admin control.

I suspect the Admins here are a little above this though ;)

Anything stored on any computer with access to a network is accessible to those with the will.

Regarding PM's it is a feature built into most Message board software that Admin can monitor PM's.

Well mods and suoermods cant read them ,

however i was once told that admin would only read a pm if there was a complaint made about it.

That was a few years ago though so i'm not sure if the software has changed,

only Les or Steve can answer this one really.

They are usefull for contacting a single person rather than clogging up the forum for the rest of us.

Admins can rightly view them to stop spam and so they can keep check up on abuse.

As I said in the previous message, if you want to saysomething in private then the internet isn't the place for it.

Big brother is always watching. There will be hundreds of computers reading messages and forum posts before and after they reach their destination for instance looking for keywords like 'bomb' and 'attack' etc. Even search engine bots read posts as well as bots that scan all internet pages for signs of email addresses and banking details.

I am admin on another forum that uses the Invision Board and although I could read a PM if I wanted to, the process to get to that point is quite involved and I really could not be bothered to snoop.

As far as I am concerned a PM is private.
