If you are getting a courtesy car because yours is being repared due to accident damage most insurers will only allow for a small / medium car, i.e. under 1500cc.

It helps them keep their premiums down ( if you believe that !!!! )

Just to mix things up a bit, when my old 1.8 focus bit the tarmac, I got a proton. It was a lose lose situation really. Sorry.

If you get a courtesy car from an approved repairer it'll just be whatever cars the garage has there - usually what is known as a "group a" vehicle. If the accident is non-fault, and a non fault hire company puts you into a non fault hire this is usually a group a vehicle unless you have needs which means you require a like for like vehicle. In Insurance - more when hire vehicles come into play there is something called "mitigating your losses" which everybody should do.

It is a common mistake for people to assume that when they have an accident they will get a like for like vehicle "just because"...

When I had my Mondeo and I was rear ended, I was offered a Vauxhall Corsa. However, this was about a week before going on holiday with the family so I rang them up and complained and they upgraded me to a brand new mondeo! If you have a NEED for a similar sized car and it's not your fault, many insurers will get you a similar hire car.

Had an Audi vandalised, the leasing company insisted the car went to a Ford dealer. The Ford place lent me a very dirty Ka and wouldn't even clean it inside before I took it out, they also made a poor job of the repairs and it took months to sort out with an eventual remedy at an Audi dealer (Memo to self: NEVER buy a Ford).

Until end of Sept this year I had a BMW 320dSE Tourer. When it blew it's engine (at 45mph!!) the BMW assist scheme failed to supply a car. Leasing company came to the rescue and sent me "a car of equivalent type" - a bog standard Skoda Octavia 1.9 Diesel. This car was very uncomfortable to drive so I visited the local BMW dealer who had originally supplied my car and after almost 2 weeks they lent me a 120d. In between this time the Skoda (brand new) refused to start so the leasing company organised a VW Sharan (it's all they had).

BTW after 3 weeks the BMW had still not been fixed. It was under warranty but the local dealer was swamped with routine work booked in and broken beemers. My company washed our hands of the beemer and terminated the contract early. I now have a T180 Tourer and I'm very pleased with it so far.

Had to take the T180 back for a small rattle around the interior light switch to be sorted. This was done inside a day and the dealer (who supplied the car) lent me a new Yaris whilst apologising there were no Avensis cars available because they had booked me in at very short notice. No complaints here.
