Avensis T180 Versus Lexus Is2.2d

When the time comes that I've saved up enough pennies to swap my 2.0d I was thinking about the T180 or a Lexus IS diesel. Both seem to get good reviews for certain aspects with a few criticisms, and there is a temptation there for the Lexus low depreciation.

Just out of interest - which would be the better buy?

Dunno why, but I'd go for Lexus. Can't say I've weighed each other up but in my mind Lexus wins...

Maybe Lexus have such a good media campaign I just think Lexus is better....

I am also looking at buying a fully loaded T180 next month, not considered the Lexus in fairness, but have heard the serviceing and parts costs are much higher.

Just to let you know, I have sourced a T180 with Protection pack, Full colour GPS, Metallic paint for 19.5K, so thats about 18K for the base car. Anyone recon they could beat this?

I'm not sure this is comparing apples with apples as it were. The T180 and the Lexus are really aimed at different markets. The Lexus is more overtly in the junior executive class whereas the T180 is an upper notch family car being offered as a saloon, hatch or estate. Cars like the T180 and the new Passat are starting to blur the gap between family and executive cars but I think there's still a distinction.

I have a T180 Tourer and I'm delighted with it. I moved from a BMW 320dSE Tourer but didn't consider Lexus as they (and now the BMW) are out of my monthly budget (the company FD reduced all car budgets to make his mark - he's now as popular as a poo in a swimming pool!). Lexus don't offer an estate car so this also rules them out even if I could find an appropriate deal, I need an estate for work/family motoring.

The T180 is actually quicker and more quiet than my BMW but the beemer was much better in the twisty stuff. As far as I can see the Lexus will cost more to service but this could be balanced by a higher residual value on resale.

Depends what you want/need, all I can suggest is you go with the decision that feels right for you if you can afford both cars. Then go and enjoy it, the 2.2 D-CAT engine is a cracking motor!

well looking at good old top gear, the basic 2.2 IS is going to be around 21.5K so thats and extra 2.5 for a base model. Engine looks much the same as the t180 including the insurance group, though the T180 has the edge (yeh like you would notice). Need to look into the gadgets you get on the base model.

My brother in law had a IS and he ended up getting rid due to servicing costs.

Alan partridge had one as well.. LOL

Anyone diven both on a test drive that can compare? I am thinking that the avensis ain't great around corners. Is the lexus any better?
