Rear Brake Noise

I've done a search, and can't find anything that fits what I can hear so........

Are the T-sport brakes noisey as standard?

When I bought the car, I was told that the brakes were making a funny noise, but it would be sorted before I picked the car up. When I collected it, was told that front discs and pads were changed to cure the noise. Brakes have been noisy since then (mid September) and to begin with I thought it was either the new brakes bedding in or oxidisation on the discs clearing. The noise is also coming from the rear and not the front. Don't think it's from oxidisation now, as it's happening even when the discs aren't oxidised or after I've done some hard braking. I've probably driven 5 or 600 miles since I've had the car, so don't think they're still bedding in.

It had a new MOT when I bought it, so don't think rear pads are dead. Looked at the discs, and they don't look like they're wearing unevenly or anything. No unusual amounts of brake dust either. Brake guards were pushed back before to get rid of another funny noise, so it's not that. Only way I can describe hte noise, is like a washing machine slowing down from a spin cycle. Not a metallic noise, just sounds like there's friction somewhere. Mostly hear it when braking from higher speeds, but it is there on nearly all braking. The performance of the brakes is fine.

Sorry for the long post, just want to get it sorted whilst it's still under warranty. Any ideas?

Hi Rallybunny, Have you read my mail at the bottom of the list where I asked the very same question?

The attached photo's show what I found. The rear discs were rubbing on the back plate that supports the small internal handbrake shoes. I originally thought it was the thin stone guard, but there is a smaller plate attached to these inside that cannot be seen unless you remove the rear discs. Things are obviously very close on the back and going around corners eventually exerts just enough load to make thing come into contact. I've since knocked the offending edge back very slightly to provide a bit of clearance.

I still occasionally get a slight rumble, which sounds more like the wheel bearings. I can't detect any play in the wheels with the car jacked up though. Some reviews I have read have said the T Sport is much noisier inside compared to the other models in the range. Could be due to less sound insulation, harder suspension or just tyre niose I guess.

Terry (Oddbod).

Thanks, Oddbod, I did read your post and wondered whether it may be that, but my noise happens when braking in a straight line too.

my g/f s t sport does the same thing. it sounds like rubbing/grinding noise from the rear discs.

hers does it every time you brake.

from what i can see the pads seem to sit with the very edge close to the centre of the disc where there is a line of rust. i think the pads catch that and cause the rubbing sound.

Ive got that on mine.

It kinda comes and goes depending on the weather. LOL

Ive had it checked with toyota and short of replacing the rear discs there's nothing they could think of :(

Glad to hear that i'm not alone! Just swapped my Jag S-Type for a T-Sport and i'm well impressed so far. Only concern was the noise from the brakes and now that is a weight off my mind. Thinking of putting Mintex pads in when the time comes as they worked well in my TVR Chimaera.......

Its a common problem on all yaris ts waterver age, the discs rub on a small backing plate housing the handbrake cable, you cant see it unless yuo take the disc off, then you can see the where the disc has rubbed down the metal,m just knock back that metal plate and you wont get it again, its nothing to do with th pads. Yep our TS makes the "scrubbing" noise too from the rear nearside brake, it doesn't affect it's actual braking though thankfully!

In my case I have eliminated the rubbing problem as you described but there is another noice coming from rear pads. Recently I've changed them in a Toyota garage because the were very noisy at braking (only after a long stop) but since then some other strange noises appared. Something like click, rasp and grind. It is mostly noisy when braking at reverse and sometimes when going forward. I'm going to a garage again to sort it out.

Can you show/ send me the picture too? I'm curious about what you have changed.

I only notice this grinding sound when going trough corners. It doesn't make the sound when braking on a straight line.

And it looks as if it makes the grinding sound when I braked a bit harder before going into a corner.

Looks... because my car makes the sound now and then, not always.
