Shaking Celica, Any Ideas?

I was driving home this weekend and coming along the M2 my car started behaving oddly. When I lifted off the accelerator the car started shaking quite violently, so I pulled over to the hard shoulder and checked the wheels to make sure there wasn't anything obviously wrong. There wasn't so I headed home slowly. Later I had to pick up my housemate and the car was fine. The next day on the way to and from work it did it again, exactly the same thing.

I rang my local Toyota Dealer and they told me they couldn't touch it as it's an import. :censor:

So I popped down to Kwik-Fit this morning and they checked it over and couldn't find a fault with the tracking or the tyres and there was no play in the wheels. One of them took it out for a test drive and unfortunately it behaved itself.

So I rang The Supraman who my Toyota dealer had mentioned and I'm taking it to him tomorrow morning. It's just really bugging me now, I'm supposed to be at work but I don't really want to drive it until I know it's fixed or that it's not a serious fault. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?

Any ideas where the shake was coming from? Front or Rear? Is it dependant on speed or revs?

I thought it was coming from the front on the passenger side which is why I thought it might be a wheel bearing but it's definitely at the front.

It seems to happen around 80  and it happens when I release the accelerator, if I put my foot down again it lessens the shaking.

Sounds like you may have lost a balance weight on one of the wheels. Have you had them balanced recently?

Easy solutions:

1) Don't do 80

2) Don't stop accelerating

bang goes my theory if its speed and not revs.

sounds like a buckled wheel to me.did kwik fit check for that?

Surely a buckle / missing weight would be noticable on acceleration as well as lifting off the gas?

Quite possibly. Just another avenue to explore  . But sometimes a wheel wobble only becomes apparent at a particular speed. It`s usually about 40 - 50.

TBH i wouldn`t trust a kwik fit fitter further than i could throw one. :D They may be good with tyres and exhausts but you really need a trained mech to sort out possible suspension/transmision issues.

As for the Toyota garage, I`d go and ask them why they cant look at it. It`s the same type of car they sold in this country isn`t it??? !Removed! fools. I`ve got no time for MrT i`m afraid. :ffs:

They claimed that the specification is different and Toyota won't provide them with manuals or technical specifications. He also said that they use different colour coding with JDM vehicles. I would imagine that some of that is <the spuds of lurrrrvve>s and it's mostly that Toyota don't want us to buy JDM vehicles because it eats into their profits.

I guess it could be a buckled wheel but I wouldn't have thought so. I've only had the car since June and I put four new tyres on it and had the tracking done then. I've not had any real knocks since. I'll let you know what the outcome is tomorrow, I just hope it's not too expensive.

I took the car to the Supraman today and he thinks that it may be the drivetrain so he wants to take out the drive shafts and send them off to be balanced. Unfortunately I need the car this weekend so I can't do it until next week. At least I'm a little closer to getting it sorted. Thanks for all the advice.

Exactly  :ffs:

How strange. Suppose one of them could`ve got out of true with a knock. Good luck with it anyway. Keep us informed of the proceedings.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi,

Ive got a 4th Gen GT auto (Super RED)

I have exactly the same problem, cant establish wich side its on but its definenetly from the front.

My drivers side CV joint clicks badly thus im having it replaced this weekend, had both front tires balanced.

Could a previous knock or misaligned tracking cause this??????

BTW: Dont know how to describe this but even during crawling movement in traffic it bops, need to swap the wheels round to establish if its a buckle?

TIA

Can't help with the problem but you should complain about that dealership, it's bang outa order. Mines an import and the dealership near me was happy to take my money. A toyota is a toyota at the end of the day.

Now this is slightly embarrasing but I'd rather ask you guys facelessly over the internet than a mechanic in person.

The day before my car started acting up the petrol got down to pretty much completely empty before I could fill it up. Is there a chance that the shaking could have been caused by some debris in the fuel tank having been sucked into the engine? I'm just wondering as I've done about another 600 miles since I took it to the supraman (had to go to wales at the weekend) and now it's acting fine again.

It is possible. But any dirt particles or water would have to get past the fuel filters first. However it`s possible that the pick up filter or the fuel filter was partially blocked. probably the former. Putting a few gallons of fresh petrol would`ve sent the gunge back to the bottom of the tank where it belongs.

I cant see that the suspension, wheels or whatever could start shaking about without some assistance from someting like a pothole or heavy kerb contact.

I`d keep going as you are but be aware of any changes in steering or suspension performance.
