The rear cortesy light has never worked.

Hi Macspeedy

The system thinks that there is a door not closed properly. That is probably why it won't lock, but will unlock. All the door switches for the coutesy lights must work properly, including the tailgate. Try your central locking from the driver's door switch, with the ignition on. Open the driver's window, lock the doors with the switch and go around the doors from the outside to check they have locked. Don't rely on the lock buttons as indicators. There is a possibility that you have a broken wire in the loom to the drivers door switches. I know you don't want to hear it, but it may be time to have a word with Mr T. Regards Ray

Thanks for you advice, the strange thing is that for months the system worked fine with the alarm setting with the boot open, wonder why it sunddenly stopped, i realise there is a haynes on the way for this car but i read somewhere that someone might have access to some circuit diagrams can anyone help?

Thanks

A week on and hows the alarm - my 99 avensis has just started going nuts, normally 1hour after it's been locked via fob. If this has worked for you then I might give it ago.

The wife wants the car gone as she has lost all faith in it having had so much go wrong over the last 4 months (almost 5 years perfect and then last 4 months !!)

do you have a run down of the cost - was it a cheap part which took ages to fit or expensive part and quick fit.

Does anyone know where the lock mech is on the mk1 avensis - do I need to remove the door lining or is it up front somewhere.

I've just diagnosed a similar problem. The car wouldn't lock on the remote but the alarm would set ok.

Inside the drivers door lock assembly there is a tiny microswitch that detects what position the lock is in. This is what is causing the problem. It's supposed to momentarily switch to let the system know that the door has locked. If there is a wrong signal from the switch the doors get confused and don't lock the car.

A solution is to get to the loom that feeds into the drivers door lock and take the plug apart and remove the signal wire from the five pin connector. (I think it's the black and white one, but it's the odd wire out.) Any way you remove the cable from the plug and you lose the ability to lock and unlock the whole car from the key manually (the key doesn't tell the car to unlock, only the drivers door now unlocks on the key) but the remote will now lock the car as it should. The antijack switch still works as normal as well and the strange operations on the alarm go away.

Than you can start to look for a replacement door lock assy from the breakers. Part no. 6903005601 218.22

The door comes apart by taking the switch assy off then the six plastic trim screws (quarter turn), then two screws under the switch assy and then the screw under the door lock knob then you carefully pull the door trim away from the door itself.

Go on give it a go.
