Hi guys hope you can help have had my avensis for 3 years. 2001 1.8 vvti.

Car was not used for 6 months and hence tax and mot expired. Now when recently started it no probs starting but the engine management light has come on and the engine is shaking herenderously.

Thought it may be an oxygen sensor has car is smoking slightly. Took to a local mechanic who told me that it was the head but there is no mixing of oil and water.

Here then removed the head had it skimmed and pressure tested guess what its fine. He now thinks it’s the cylinder block?

One engineer said the block is beyond repair the other said its okay?

Any advise would be greatly appreaciated.

Thanks for your help new plugs, oil and air filters have serviced the car even swapped the injectors arou nd still made no difference baffled was thinking could be linked to ECU or oxygen sensors but does not explain why the engine lausing compression

OK at high revs

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a Avensis CDX Auto Estate X Reg.

I bought it second hand 3 years ago.

After one year I had several time the Engine Management lit up. I have it on for more than 3 months now.

The only thing I notice it is a high petrol consumption in town.

Last year a Toyota Dealer wanted to change head gasket + part of engine for £2000.

I took the car in France. They cancelled the fault and gave me the full diagnostic report with the code error. The code error says that Toyota Service Centre HQ has to be contacted. They think that one oxygen sensor is faulty and need to be changed.

They could not do the repair as I was not able to stay long enough. Cost 46 Euros for the engine test + car cleaning.

I am bringing the car next december to France to have it repaired and serviced to avoid to be ripped off in UK.

The sensor cost around 100 euros and probably 2 hours labour.

If you need expensive parts, go to France as well.

Hope it may help

You need someone to check the Basics again:

1 - Compression Test (engine warmed up,throttle fully open)

2 - Wet Compression Test ( a few pumps of oil down the bore,to see if the Compression Increases due to worn rings).

3 - Cylinder Leakage Test ( to check the sealing of the Valve's,Head Gasket,Rings etc).

If the results of the above are ok,then you know the Internals of the engine are good enough to "fire" the engine.

You can then start checking the ignition and fuel System.

When was the Fuel Filter last changed??

The Throttle body may need cleaning internally if the car has done more than 50,000 miles.

Corroded terminal block connectors on the engine.

Battery condition/voltage.

Hope some of this helps you sort the problem out

Bit late but we had a new shape avensis with 25k on clock with a ecu light and it seemed to be running rough and lack of power. After taking off the cam cover we found that there was a cam bearing that had failed, causing the vvt-i system to do all sorts of things. After speaking to a toyota dealer we found that they'd had a few of these problems. That was a 1.8 vvt-i. Has for value we sold at work a 51 plate GS 1.8 avensis for £3495 that had 78k on the clock.
