Radio Aerial Question

I have a D4D CDX 2000 avensis .it has a radio aerial mounted on the roof at the front .The reception is not very good on FM.I noticed that the aerial itself is sleeved a little way along its length just as though someone has repaired it with some heatshrink stuff .Is this the norm for this model's aerial?Also is the angle to the horizontal critical on these aerials ?

Can't say I have any reception problems with mine. It does have the bit that looks like it's been joined as you describe. As do all the others I've seen providing they've not been replaced due to car wash accidents! i've got mine at about 45 degrees from the roof. Can't have it any more as it catches the garage door.
