Wind Noise

Hello All

New to this site but found it very informative and was very interested to hear of other people having the same problem as I did regards the flywheel issue . Oddly my Toyota garage had never heard of the problem either - strange since they diagnosed the problem in 3 minutes! Luckily I was covered under warranty and replaced at 37000 miles.

Anyway my problem is that I get excessive wind/whistling noise (not me personally I add) above 50MPH on my Rav 4 D4D 02 plate. One person said it might be the rubber seals around the window as a little misshapen, now car 4 years old, someone else said it might be the air scoop on the bonnet. Has anyone any ideas or solutions?

On another note further to my first point regards the flywheel, does anyone know if replacement flywheel are better engineered than the original? Mine was changed last September at a local garage so only done around 12000 miles since and the owner said that after speaking to the trade the problem well known and possible to repeat after another 36000 miles?

I still like the rav though despite some niggles.

Many thanks

Dave

Hi Dave

Yet again the flywheel problem rears its ugly head; I have a Rav d4d on a 52 plate with 51000 miles on the clock and am experiencing some odd vibrations when accelerating and decelerating in fifth also when clutch starts to bite. Can you describe your cars symptoms prior to replacing the flywheel, and also give name and address of your Toyota dealer as mine couldn’t diagnose a flat tyre!

Regards

Brian

Hi Brian

My local dealer is Toyota Yeovil, Somerset. Sorry to say it sounds like you have the same problem but mine happen in 3/4/5th gear when accelerating. You get odd vibration and noise problems which sound like a heat shield or exhaust system are the problem but when checked are OK.

I think the part is somewhere between £500 - £800 plus labour but if this is your problem I would advise checking the part has some form of warranty in case the problem re-occurs. I also had the clutch changed at same time, it didn’t need to be replaced but it had incurred excessive wear for mileage due to problem. I had a warranty from the dealer (not Toyota) I bought my used Rav from and so took it to a local independent garage but reading some postings on this site there MIGHT have been a recall for problem - worth asking your local dealer. I would be interested to hear what you find out.

Cheers

Dave
