i put 30 pound of 97 ron fuel in the car today, was ok at first then started to run very smokey.performance seemed great tho. i left the car for a bit and when i restarted it is seemed to be really sluggish, like it was miss firing. the smoke just smaeel like performance fuel but it may be a problem. suggestions please :(

97 RON wouldn`t affect it like that. Sounds more like a mixture problem. Check the electrical connection on the air flow meter and O2 sensor. Check all vacuum and air hoses for leaks. Although i suspect it`s the O2 sensor that may have packed up. :(

It might be worth while doing an ECU reset as well.

Recently someone I work with put a full tank of unleaded fuel in his car, from the unleaded pump, showed unleaded on the receipt, was charged the price for 47litres of unleaded and showed unleaded on the pump log. The car broke down within a mile and a lot of smoke, got it towed away and the garage diagnosis - tank full of diesel!!! No-one can explain how it happened, but the unleaded pump had served diesel!

I suspect it is a money saving feature of modern fuel delivery pumps that they only have one pump/metering device shared by the different fuel types, so a problem with a selector valve, solenoid or computer could lead to the wrong fuel being delivered - just a thought...

Righty ho. pay attention at the back. :D

AFM is just behind the Battery, alluminium lump attached to the air box. There`s an electrical connector plugged into it. Check that.

The air hoses going from the AFM to the inlet manifold should be secured by jubiee clips. Check those for fit and tightness.

Vacuum hoses are the thin (8-10mm dia) pipes that sprout from just about anywhere in the engine bay. Check them all for cracks and to make sure there are none which have become disconnected.

Now for the difficult bit. The O2 (Lambda) sensor on yours is (i think) located at the bottom end of the downpipe, leading from the exhaust manifold. Just check the electrical connections for security. To check the sensor, use an ohmeter and measure the resistance between terminals +B and HT. The readings should be between 5.1 & 6.3 kilo-ohms at 68 deg F (20 deg C)

ECU reset is easy. Either remove the ECU fuse from the engine bay fusebox. (Should be marked on the lid which one) Or, disconnect the Battery earth lead for a couple of minutes. Whichever one you do, you should dab the brake pedal a couple of times. (This just activates the brake lights and removes any residual current from the system) Reconnect Battery and jobs done. Drive the car normally for a few miles and this will allow the ECU to relearn all the necessary functions.

ECU reset should be a last resort.
