Dealer Rip Off - Or Not?

Right. I'm going to buy a new Avensis. I've studdied the Internet, cruised these forums for any problems, and settled on My new car.

It's an Avensis T180 Estate with all the options, Protection pack, Technology pack and Full colour sat nav.

So I get a price from a screen scraper web site which offers me £21K about 3.7K off list.

I've been into the dealer and after three days of haggling they can only come in £600 over this which according to them is cost plus £500 handling.

Now a few mates in the know recon there is somthing called Reciprocal discount which means they can sell a car under cost but claim it back fro Mr T. Deffo exists in Audi and Nissan networks. This is what appears to be happening with the web site.

Question is, is this true, is it worth me trying another dealer, should I just go for the brokers quote.

I know it's slightly off topic and non technical but any advice from the trade or anyone most appreciated.

Cheers

for £600 at least you will know where the dealer is should anything go wrong. it will carry more weight if you went in and spoke to him face to face rather than discussing problems over the phone with a broker who doesnt give a damn and lives in.....

you cannot expect to get the same discount as they have staff to train and premisis to heat etc.

i think £3k off list from a dealer is a good price

tbh, new cars at this time of year don't generally make a great deal as the business is exceptionally slow and they'll do whatever they can to get your business, remember if you are paying full whack fot he packs they will also be making a profit on those as well :D

Yep, some good points. Just need to decide if I can afford that extra £600 or take the risk. On balance thought I would like to support the local dealer... Wonder if he will throw in the usual mats and a full tank of fuel :D

The other point is, suppose I do buy from a broker and I need a warranty repair from my local dealership. Do they get paid by Mr T for doing it? If so I guess they wouldn't be bothered where the car came from. If not I guess they would.

OOps, Just been to the last Toyota garage in the area that I hadn't been to and asked for a deal. Told him what he needed to do and he beat my internet quote straight off by £400. No messing around, so thats £4100 off list price. Couln't get the options I wanted though. 3 months delivery date for the full color sat nav and you can no long buy that with the tec pack. Apparently they don't work too well together.

Upon reflection though £750 for full colour sat nav??? I'll just buy a tom tom if I want to upgrade the inbuilt one.

So worked out at 17pc off list I think, oh and I have just paid a deposit.

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

Test drove one again and once you are over 1.5K rpm it's like a rocket. Very Very fast car! Picking it up Mid Dec.

Hi Chris,

I'm sure you'll really enjoy your new T180. I have a T180 Tourer, I only specced metallic paint but it was delivered to the local dealer within 7 days of ordering.

Thanks Shoto. It was the colour that is leading to the delay. Trust me to choose the one with the longest wait time.

Come on december!
