Close To Buying A Four!

Hi all

Today I want to testdrive my 3rd four and I realy like this one.

Basically I'll be paying about 1.5 grand on top of my ST202.

It's done around 60K and the engine looks great! No power loss at all and mechanically well looked after.

The only thing that worries me is that there's a lot of knocking in front.

I'm not sure if it's the fig 8's?

Also sometimes the engine light comes on so I think there is an engine fault.

The guy says it's normal but we all know it's not.

He turns iton and off a few time and it goes away. I thought if the ECU detects a fault then it will stay logged untill it's gone but this comes and goes.

What do you think?

Still a good buy?

How much you think I'll be spending on top to fix it up?

i would leave it.

knocking is never good and if its fig 8s your talking £700ish for both sides.

ECU light not a good sign either :!Removed!:

how much they asking for it?

He's asking for 4 grand.

I think the ECU light is on becasue the coolant level is low.

But that can be found out when I figure out how to do this ECU test.

If both fig 8's need changing then that would mean I'll be spending £1400 total £5400. And to be honest the rest of the car looks fab.

Think I should still hold out?

Thanks Adam. I think I'm too excited and that I've been looking for a long time and really want one. I alway knew that everyone here would talk some sence into me. :D

Just looked at http://www.tcbparts.co.uk/ and the fig 8's only cost £ 55.00 + ( £ 9.63 v.a.t.) each?

Is that £700 from Toyota dealer? If that's the case I may consider buying the parts and aking to my mates garage and have a crack at it my self???

Edit again....

I think most people replace the lower suspension arms too? If so then thats around £200 each... hummmm... Now I'm lost! :(

yeah your right, you have to replace the lower arms along with the fig 8s.

Have you looked on gt4oc to see members cars for sale? these usually have all problems sorted before they are for sale

i would either leave it... or get them to knock alot off the price (and check what error the ecu has spotted, if its something like cahrgecooler cooland thats easy to sort ;) )

Like Adam says, either get a nice reduction on the price, or leave it well alone..... I would go with the latter personally ;)

If it's knocking at the front it's almost definately the fig 8/lower arm, about the right mileage for that as well. With regards to the ecu light if he's saying it's normal he doesn't know anything about the car. This could be a good thing, check the code if it 54 check the coolant level then if that's low you know what it is, at this point you turn around and tell him the code and say you want a drop in price because the chargecooler pump is dead as this is also covered by 54 ;) .

I'd also get him to pay for the fig 8 lower arms as well.

If he won't play ball with above walk away there are good ones out there, that have been properly looked after, I know people normally shy away from private sales but with this sort of car you can be better off buying private I would recommend taking an experienced four owner with you to view though.

Think of it like this, if you had a duff GT-four you where trying to get rid of would you:

A)Try and sell it privately where you more likely to get people who know about the car looking at it.

OR

B)Take it to a trader who won't even look at it but just look in his glasses guide and give you a trade price and swap it for a different car.

;)

Thanks for your comments guys.

I know this dealer doesn't know anything about GTfours so knocking it down shouldn't be a problem.

I'll go see him again on Sunday and find the ECU fault.

As for the lower arms and fig 8 I think I'll get him to sort it out and if not try and knock off about £500 off it.

And when did you sell yours Chris.S?

GT4OC hasn't had anything recently and I've been looking for 2 months now. Never is a white one and when there is it's out of my price range cos it's TOO good.

As for taking someone who has a four.... well anyone live near slough? :)
