How To Remove Tints

My AE86 has tinted rear windows which are scratched from 20 years of cleaning etc, so I'd like to remove the tints and get them spruced up as I'm restoring the rest of the car so may as well go the whole hog!

Can someone give me an idea of how it's done, or will I have to get it done professionally?

Thanks!

hi,

never tried it before but i would say, make a small slit with a sharp knife and get it starting to peel, then use a hair dryer and a plastic card and peel it away...

a bit like removing graphics off the body work

but after 20yrs... its probabally welded on... :P

I would heat it up first so that it helps to melt the glue holding it on  !

Dentol floss is also handy to slide inbetween the glass/plastic to cut through the glue  !

What?... like get the blow torch to it??? LOL only joking! So it's gonna be a long slow process by sounds of it! :( Is there any fluids that will help clean it off quicker???

Did this with my Supra because the tints it came from Japan with were quite ludicrously dark. Couldn't see a damn thing out the back window and it was never more than twilight inside the car :)

Anyway, I tried the hairdryer approach first and found that actually it didn't make much difference to just picking at an edge and then pulling the damn stuff off. Keeping the angle between the glass and the film that you're removing as shallow as possible (ie don't pull it back on itself or at 90 degrees or anything) helped to minimise the amount of glue that stayed on the glass rather than the film.

Any glue marks that are left can be removed with sticky stuff remover. You'll probably need to clean the glass after that too to remove the residue of the remover :P
