:D Hi all, i just got myself a carina e gti :yahoo: , i had to go down to england to pic it up and she drove fine all the way back up to my home. Anyway today it would struggle to go into 3rd gear, i also got a shock from the gear stick when trying to change into it, it was like the times when you dont fully engage the clutch and you get the sort of shocky feeling. I was told by the seller to put dextron 2 automatic transmission oil in the box. There is the reccommended 85/95 oil in the box at the moment, if anyone knows anything else that could be causeing the problem, it would be much appreciated, thx all kind regards :D .

Sounds like your 3rd gear syncro is worn. This will need a full gearbox strip and the syncro replacing. You could try auto gear oil as it is thinner it some times will hide a gear problem. As it will not cause anymore damage it is worth a go.

Hi m8, are you 100% positive its the gear synchro?, ive been to many places with different opinions and im confused now, i thought maybe crunching into 3rd would be the problem but it doesent do that. When your slowing down from 30 though to a stand still, i put it from neutral into 3rd a few times, you can feel a click when pushing forward into 3dr. Anyone else got more help on this?, thx all, kind regards TRIG:].

Don't put ATF fluid in it. Lots of books including the Halfords one list the wrong gearbox oil for the car. As far as I know, its not uncommon to use a thinner oil in a race setup when the gearbox doesn't need to last v. long...

I changed mine for 85, and put some molyslip in it. Kinda masks the problem a bit.

Toyota recommend API GL3 SAE 75/90 gearbox oil on the ST models.
