Hi, Please can anyone help me , i just bought a toyota gt4 1994 model, it,s lush, the previous owner said he never had any probs with it from the day he had it 9 years ago. i drove it home, when i stopped, steam pored out of the intercooler, when i took itout next, it was losing water, sometimes it can go for 50 miles, no steam or water at all, then next trip it will pour water from underneath. I,ve been to garages and got differant answers, some say the thermostate is jammed, but the water is circulating, some say the head gasket as gone, and some say the head is cracked. Whe i had it 2 weeks ago the radiator water was full of rust so i had it flushed though till it was clean, when it be running, just parked up it does,nt lose water, but when i go out in it, it loses water when i stop or steams, Have i wasted my money on a duff car? Please if you can give me some advise, my e,mail address is guzzigirl69@aol.com

p.s, the car passed the mot last week with flying colours, even though it has been stood for 18 months,

Jan

Umm  You lost me a bit there

Firstly if it's a 1994 model it should be the ST205 GT4 and look something like this

PICT0057.jpg

Is the steam coming from the Intercooler(Chargecooler system) or the engine radiator, both contain coolant and both are separate systems and will have very different outcomes with problems.

What condition is the radiator in they are known to be a problem when they get old due to the plastic end tanks cracking, the top of the main engine radiator the one right at the front of the engine bay with the fans attached to it should be black when in good condition brown to creamy ones with cracks across them are old until that will need replacing now or soon...

Not really the easiest problem to diagnose over the internet get some photos of the engine bay and also where the leak appears to be coming from. It's unlikely to be the headgasket or cylinder head as these are both pretty strong on the ST205 and something needs to have gone fairy wrong to cause problems there, thermostat is a possiblity though, is the engine overheating at all??

I had the same problem the other day.

I was losing water and steam was coming out when i stopped... it was just a lose water line on the turbo... which only leaked under pressure but not when it was parked. the water was making contact with the exhaust causing the steam

u may just have a simple water leek from somewhere
