Verso 2.2 Dtd Consumption And Fuel Gauge

Hi, I have a 2.2 diesel Verso (06 plate).

Ever since owning it, to be honest I have been disapointed with the consumption. I have never really managed to get close to the published figures, even if driving with a very light right foot.

Also, I have noticed the eratic behaviour of the fuel gauge and the range computer. The fuel guage takes 200-250 miles to get to haft full and then to empty in 100-150 miles in the second half of the tank. I am also finding that when the range says 0 miles, the car only takes around 47 litres of fuel, far less than the 55 litre capacity of the tank! The range of the tank when full normally only says between 380 and 420 miles. 440 miles should be the absolute minimum for the tank, so something is a little wrong here!

My local Toyota garage are looking at replacing the computer, but it would be useful to know if any other owners have the same issues.

Cheers in anticipation.

Matt

I have the same model on the same reg plate.

And exactly the same 'novel' fuel gauge.

To be honest my local dealer inspires so little confidence that I have figured out how the gauge reads and decided to call it a 'characteristic'.

However my trip computer seems to be OK, and the fuel consumption which I have manually kept a check on is looking good. As near as damn it to the quoted figures. And my right foot never has been able to handle 'light' as my long suffering wife would testify.

I have seen the fuel gauge subject before on this forum so it clearly is not just a one-off.

My T180 is exactly the same in terms of the fuel gauge, even when filling up to the brim after doing 450 miles on a tank the range has always shown as well under 400 miles! I can usually get close to the published consumption figures providing there's not been too much hill work - can be tricky though living in the Cotswolds.

I've got used to the fact that it takes over 300 miles for the gauge to drop below half full & then barely 100 to get to empty. Hope they don't use them as hire cars - could catch out the unwary!

Spoke

I am getting close to the combined figure, but I am not getting much more on a long run. The computer says I am getting 50-54 to the gallon (cough cough), but this does not seem to be transpiring at the pump! lol Typical eh!

Yes this seems to be the same on all versos ! my verso(2-2 D4D) is exactly the same but it does bring back memories as I have previously owned a Carina and the fuel gauge was the same as this .

Fuel consumption is at about 42 mpg but as the car is still new with 400 miles on the clock hopefully it will get better when filled full the range is about 350miles to 380 miles

Yep, same here. Long running problem this I think. My gauge is all over the place once it gets past half way. It goes down much quicker once it's past half way also.

Hi Guys, I wouldn't get carried away with the fuel gauges "personality" I drive quite a bit for work and change cars every couple of years, each manufacturers gauge is a bit different, one vauxhall i had was very similar to my versos in that it didn't drop in a linear fashion - it just kind of speeded up the emptier it got. The best gauge i've ever had was in a renault laguna II, very, very accurate.

The reason the trip doesn't display the correct distance to empty mileage, for the amount of fuel that the specification says the tank holds when full is because of the reserve in the tank, the verso shows a light when there is approx 50 to 60 miles of fuel left (dependant on current mpg), at zero miles (on the trip) you can actually drive a further 30 miles or so... when you fill up if you add the 60 miles reserve to the trip distance to empty of 420 miles your as near as damn it to the distance you can travel based on the maximum fuel capacity shown in the specs. The renault did it differently, in that the gauge was accurate in a linear fashion, the trip distance to empty figure changed to dashes as soon as you hit the reserve (50 miles). Each manufacturer does it differently... Just bear in mind you have whatever your trip says on distance to empty + 40 to 60 miles, on the renault I knew if the distance to empty said "--" i had, at most, 50 miles to go :)

I think most cars I have ever driven operate the same way....you seem to get more in the first half than the 2nd.

The thing is most people are comparing a full tank PLUS the extra fuel in the filler pipe from the fuel cap to the tank down to the half way mark as one level and then the 2nd half is from half way to the orange light.

The orange light to empty is usually about 8litres depending on the car and the filler pipe could hold a few litres also so its quite possible there is a difference of about 10litres when you are comparing one side of the gauge to the other.

Not sure if I made myself very clear there

Glad I read this post. Just got a 2.2 D4-D in SR spec. Filled up with fuel on Saturday. Fuel gauge still reads as it did just after the fill up i.e. a full tank, despite driving 100 miles and the miles to next fill up dropping from about 380 to 275.

My 2.2 D4d 140HP Does between 38-41 mpg ( Carefull use of throttle )if I am lucky. Thr trip indicates 53.9mpg !!! The dealer told me about the reserve but still the efficiency is terrible. I had myInjectors replaced after 2500 miles. Apparently they are having problems with the injectors coking!! The tech guy told me that they have had a problem with the materials that make up the injectors. Dont know the details but bound to be someone that does. Anyway had them replaced and still have crap economy. Due to this and many other faults I am getting a replacement verso. Hope its better, cos I like its versatility. Bring back my skoda Octavia, all is forgiven.

Got my Verso 2.2d last week. the fuel gauge showed 1/2 full, it took 28 litres to fill it. Total tank capacity is 55 litres. I don't know the economy yet but computer is showing 50 mpg average, yet range is 374 miles so at least our two cars are consistent on the range reading. With allowances for reserve of 2 gallons and doing 45 mpg average it should say 450miles. So something isn't right.

I will do a manual calculation over a tank full to determine exactly what average mpg I get and if it is inaccurate I will ask dealer to investigate. I can't see the point of having an onboard computer if the information it provides is inaccurate.

My fuel gauge & range computer thing do much the same....

Mine (2008 2.2D T3) too. Actual average over nearly 2000 miles so far (measured fill-to-fill, although not to the brim) is about 42mpg, but the computer frequently shows an average of 53 or more. To be honest, that corner of the instrument panel is not the Verso's finest feature, in that the four readouts you really want to see - total mileage, trip mileage, clock time and external temperature - can't all be displayed at once.

I think the non-linear fuel gauge is a feature of most modern cars. If you think about it, the tank has to come to some kind of point at the bottom, or some fuel wouldn't be able to get out, so a simple float gauge is always going to fall faster as the level nears the bottom.

The thing is if you know about the anomalies due to the shape of the tank you should be able to compensate for them. I think the issue is analogue gauges. In the C4 I owned before the Verso the fuel and speed reading were much more accurate as all the displays were fly by wire.

Totally agree and it's a real faff to change the odometer readings, should be a button on the end of the wiper stalk to cycle through.

I have a 08 plate 2.2D (140) Corolla Verso SR which has now done 4000 miles.

I tend to drive quite steady but I have also found that the computer over reads by about 10% on my actual mpg. It normally shows that I have an average mpg of 65 - 75 mpg. However I normally only get 60 mpg when calculating it myself from litres filled up and miles done on that tank - it has dropped as low as 54 mpg (however that was with less than 1000 miles on the clock - it seems to get better with each tank as the engine gets run in). I normally only drive around town however I have done a few hundred miles on the motorway.

The fuel gauge shows the tank is half full after I have done 350 miles, and the computer reads that it has zero miles range after 600 miles. However when I fill the tank up to the top I can only get 45 litres in at best even though the tank is supposed to hold 55 litres. At least this means over 700 miles per tank should be possible.

I have noticed that with the cruise control set to 70 (ish) it does drink the dino juice at an alarming rate. Manually pressing the pedal does seem to use less fuel.

I have found the engine to be very powerful as I often have 6 adults and 1 child on board and you hardly notice the extra weight although mpg does drop by 1-2 mpg.

My 2.2 140 started off well from new at 50MPG on a motorway run, but after 5000 miles has since dropped to barely 33 around town, and 43 (ish) on a steady 70 MPH motorway run. All with pretty light foot. Not sure that's too bad for 1500KG + car, but I do wish it was better. My Skoda Fabia vRS with the same power output, but about 300KG lighter is 10 MPG better with the same use.

We have an 07 TSpirit , 15K miles.

Just did a 1700 mile trip and averaged 50mpg (measured via 3 tank fulls) 5 up with a full boot, car itself indicated 54-58mpg.

Pretty happy with this ..
