Painting Brake Callipers

I was thinking of painting my brake calipers, but when I started asking around to get someone to do it they wanted a fortune. They told me they would have to take the brakes completely to bits, bleed the brake fluid, spray the callipers and put it all back together again.

I don't really want to splash out the cash, and I don't want to started taking the brakes to bits myself.

I thought of carefully brush painting them, has anyone done this? if so is it possible to get a good finish?and what paint should i use?

Anyone help?

Painting brake calipers

Hammerite (smooth not dimpled) will do fine in my opinion. Obviously you have to clean the calipers up first and remove any grease etc.

What colour are you thinking of?

Or you could go to Halfords and get there own make of paint. Make sure that it's heat resistant.Thats what i done. Painted all the brake calipers all around.

Very easy job.

Use Very High Temperature paint.

Remove wheel.

Give the brake caliper a good clean.

Now put masking tape on the areas that you do not want to get paint on, the disc etc.

Spray liberally on the caliper.

It took about 7 or 8 layers per caliper before i got a good deep finish to the them.

Looks good though. Sorry no pics!!

what paint did you use mate and where di you get it from??

all i did was remove wheel,clean callipers with a wire brush put a bit of cardboard between disc and calliper and sprayed them with a silver galvanizeing spray paint

took about five minuates to do each one.

VHT paint. you can get it in any decent motor store. I got the spray cans in motorway.

Job's a piece of pop:

1) Buy Hammerite SMOOTH in required colour, wire brush and small brush

2) jack Car up (handbrake helps

3) Start to take wheel off

4) Swear at yourself for not loosening wheel nuts and lower car

5) Loosen wheel nuts

6) jack car up AGAIN

7) Take Wheel Off

8) Use wire brush to clean calliper as best you can

9) Stop choking on dust

10) Get brush dip in Hammerite and start painting thin layer

11) wait for layer to dry

12) Put another layer on

13) Go to 10

14) Repeat until decent coulr and your happy :)

Whoa - can I get some of those stickers? I'm new around here and I'm as happy as Larry that painting calipers is as easy as removing the wheels, cleaning the calipers and going nuts with a tin of Hammerite!!!

I've got new black alloys coming this week (Wolfrace Toxins 17" 205s on the front, 215s on the rear) - I'll probably do the calipers while I change the wheels. I can't decide on Red, Yellow, Black or Blue calipers...

Who is Steve - I need to PM that man! ;)

Those caliper covers look the dogs! I'm not too sure I'd feel safe having them held on with adhesive, though... Can anyone confirm that this is safe? Won't the adhesive get hot?

Hopefully the heat will melt them off; otherwise they'll keep the calipers nice and hot for you which has to be a good thing. Right

Edited to make it clear that that comment refers to Caliper Covers; painting the calipers is probably no bad thing; could help get rid of heat if the paint has the right properties.
