Oil Consumption Issue- Inevitable?

Hi,

I have an Avensis 2001 VVTi GS 1.8.

My mileage so far is 28,000 and up until now I have not noticed any extraordinary oil consumption.

I have read some horror stories in this forum about the oil consumption problem and have a simple question:

Will all owners of my model suffer from this problem sooner or later? Is that something inevitable that will affect approx. 100% of the cars due to poor design?

Depends what you call "extraordinary". 1L/1000km or?

However in the forums you can find info, that sometimes 1.8 engines has problems which results oil consumption and later on (if no actions done) - broken engine. This problem was found in previous generation avensis (we had 3 in our office and all 3 had same problems after about 75.000 km range - the engines had to be repaired).

And in forums it is said, that new generation 1.8 engines also have similar problems (of course not all of them, but some of them).

My previous car was the old shape Avensis oil consumption was okay not using any oil between services .

but when the car hit about 41,000 miles I was surprised to find I needed to start adding oil as I sold the car at 3 years old I do not know what happened after that but I would think it would have been one of the problem cars .The car was a September 2001 car

What I would say is ensure your service history is spot on and done by a Toyota dealer that way you will have some come back with Toyota GB.

I think it matters what mileage you do a year as a person who does a low mileage will not notice the extent in which the car uses the oil as opposed to high mileage users

As I have already posted on a separate thread, my 2002 Avensis started to use oil at about 45K. My Toyota dealer has been superb. No problem in acknowledging the problem and, to cut the story down to its' conclusion, I had a new engine fitted two weeks ago. A complete new engine. Now running in a car with 52K on the clock. I am certain that a full service history with Toyota is the key.

What I can say is when you get a replacement short engine the problem is definately gone - very low oil consumption !

I've been on the end of a corolla 1.4 vvt-i using oil and havin a new engine after many trips to the dealer. My dads just had a new engine in his x plate avensis. Now when i went armed to dealer with the problems with the 1.4 1.6 1.8 vvt-i engines i was told its only cars from 2000-2002. Now if the new avensis is being affected by the same problem the new block designe must not be working. So my dads new engine after another 40k will go the same way. So that means that my 54 plate avensis will be using oil in around 20k time. Am i right or wrong? Do i part ex now for the t180 avensis or wait like i was till next year. I know of a 03 and a 53 plate avensis using oil the 53 plate has only 27k on the clock.

Hiya all,

This is my first post on here (apologies if I don't do it right) as I pick up my 1.8VVT-i T3-X 03 plate tommorrow.

Purchased the car on Wednesday and on reading the forums (did'nt get much sleep after reading the steering column and oil consumption issues on the 1.8). I got in touch with Johnsons Toyota Liverpool (local Toyota dealer (who were brilliant)) on Thursday morning and the car is due for a recall re the steering (to be carried out under warranty next Wednesday).

The car has done 95k and has service log book stamps until 70k. While the steering is being done I am going to have the 80k service carried out as it is a major one and the servicing bloke said if I miss either of the 80k or 90k services I should miss the 90k as it is intermediate. Should I get the 90k done aswell so that the servicing is full if they will do it or have I blown the full service history now?

Anyway my point is that if they are carrying out the steering recall under warranty does that mean they will have to change the short block under warranty if the oil consumption is excessive ( the servicing guy mentioned he would need to monitor the oil consumption over a 1000 mile distance if the oil consumption was deemed excessive so he has not yet acknowledged whether the short block would be carried out gratis as part of the warranty).

I am loving this site, by the way.
