can anyone help me on this please.... my car is avensis d4d on 02 plate, the problem is it takes a long

time to fire up but then after few minutes the engine light comes on and then the engine cuts of.

i took the car to my local mechanic because hes got toyota diognostic machine, when he plugged it in the machine reported code 78, (fuel pump). apparently it is supposed to be a common fault on these cars.

i phoned my local dealer and he quoted me EIGHT HUNDRED AND SIXTY POUNDS + VAT!!!!

is there any place in yorkshire were i can take it to get it refurbished and also has anyone else had the same problem as me?

I had exactly the same problem!!,and exactly the same model , unfortunately it is a common problem as the fuel pump mechanic told me .In the morning ,when the car was cold ,after 20 mins warming up ,and after 3-4 crances the light came off finally , but the engine cuts off .From Toyota they advice me to go to a fuel pump service shop ,and have the inlet outlet suction control valves of the fuel pump changed .

I change those 2 valves ,it took around 20 min for that job , they cost 320E around 215 GBP ,and i see immediatelly difference in the car behavour ,the car became alive again and those difficult starts dissapear and of course engine light didnt light up again.

I hope it will last and not have the same problem after 1 month again, time will tell .

:o £860 + vat.Thats a very expensive fuel pump.Mine has just been done at Toyota and they only charged me £317 including vat to do the job.Mine is the 2.0i D4 vvti so although a different model I can't see how a garage can quote you more than double that.
