Stereo In 2003 Celica

Hi all,

I'm new to the club - as of this Wednesday, I will be the proud owner of a 2003 Celica Premium. The standard CD stereo fitted has no input for an iPod/MP3 player, so I'll need a solution for that.

If you can, please help!

If you have or have had one of these, is this stereo any good (worth keeping)?

Does anyone know who manufactures it? Is it used in other Toyota cars?

If I decide to ditch it, can I just connect my Sony MD stereo to the harness (with the right adapter)?

My Sony stereo has 35 watt outputs - what wattage are the Speakers in the Celica?

I've read that the Celica Premium has 6 Speakers, but my Sony MD stereo only has 4 channels. Can I make use of the other 2 Speakers?

If I replace the stereo I'll need a dash kit - any suggestions for a good retailer of these?

If I keep the stereo, I'll need an aux adapter so I can connect my MP3 player (I realise an FM transmitter would be an option, but I don't want the hassle with interference). Does anyone have any experience of aux adapters, and know where the best place to buy one is?

Other than ones on eBay, most don't say specifically if they'll work with the 2003 Celica's stereo. Would any of these work?

1) As with any stock stereo - it does the job, but thats about it.

2) No idea (presumably its the Toyota branded one, not the Sony in the pre-facelift?)

3) Yep, dead easy. Need a double to single din converter, and the right wiring harness, and you'll prob have to drill new holes in the stereo brackets for the screws, but no more than 30 mins work...

4) They'll be fine. The Stock stereo is about 35w. If you've after a decent sound though, look to upgrade the stock ones soon.

5) 2 Speakers in the rear, 4 in the front - 2 woofers, 2 tweeters, and if I remember right, the tweets feed off the woofers with a cross over. So its still only really a 4 speaker set-up when it comes to presentation to your stereo

6) Any local decent stereo place. I got mine from Car Electronics Ltd, in Derby / Nottingham / Leicester. Google for 'em - they do web sales. I think its an Audio(or is it Auto?)Leads one, so anywhere that sells audioleads stuff will do one. Make sure you get the right colour, as I think the dash changed colour with the facelift.

7) No experience of AUX adaptors at all I'm afraid...

That answer everything ok? Welcome to the club, excellent choice of car! Get some pics up when you get chance, we all enjoy a good drool!

Excellent, thanks very much DefiantFrog. Particularly for the info about the Speakers, I've looked all over the place for that!

It sounds like replacing the stereo with the one I've already got will be the best (and cheapest) thing to do. I still have my old Sony Xplod Speakers as well, so if it doesn't look too difficult I may replace the stock Speakers with those.

It's a black Celica like yours so (aside from the 'facelift') doesn't look too different. But the dealer should be cleaning and Supagard-ing it so I'll take some pictures while it's still nice and shiny :)
