Fuel Filter

Am going to replace the fuel filter on my carina 4AFE , the one on the bulkhead.

According to the Haynes manual you need to depressurise the system before changing it.

Is this really necessary? Will the pressure blow my head off if I dont?

The fuel pump is electric.......will removing the fuse and cranking engine till excess fuel is gone be an acceptable way?

Thanx in advance?

I've replaced three of these. Only on the first did I follow the Haynes Guidance. There is no significant pressure to release. Don't bother.

The design of the fuel filter is very poor and swapping them is surprisingly alkward. If you haven't already bought one I would recommend a geniune filter. They are a bit more expensive but the Threading on the bottom connector is much better.

Be very careful not to cross threads on this lower pipe connector. It also needs to be quite tight to produce an adaqute seal as well.

Access is difficult and I strongly suggest buying these as a standard combination spanner will slip or 'round' the nut on the pipe.

Thanks Gazza,m I have a genuine filter...(bracket wrong shape tho.

I am finding it impossible to get the upper banjo union undone........let alone the bottom pipe.

I am afraid i will fracture the pipe and /or shear the nuts.........have tried the banjo with 17mm socket and long extension bar to no avail....

I was thinking of removing the banjo joint from the injector rail.......thats if Ii can undo the bottom pipe.....

Can that piece of piping with connectors be bought from toyota or a motor factors?

I think the problem with the upper banjo will be overcome if you can secure the filter to the bulkhead in such a way that it is rigid. The whole assembly has a tendancy to flex when pressure is applied to this bolt.

This could be achieved by removing the rubber mounting bungs and using some fixing/repair washers etc. so that you can get a metal-on-metal contact between the bracket and bulkhead. The bolt should give way. the problem is likely to be corrosion on the copper sealing rings rather than on the threads themselves. A good soaking with release oil may also help.

You will be able to reuse the old bracket. Can't comment upon your other idea.

Good luck.

Well got the new filter fitted Gazza.............the amount of crap that came outta the old one convinced me it was a good idea.

Tho it is a pig of a job im glad i did it..........no more flat spots..........much better throttle response and smoother acceleration.

Did you notice similar improvements yerself?

Thanks again for your help Gaz!
