Hi, I have a 1991 Geo Prizm which is really a cheaper version of the Toyota Corolla of the same year. It has a Toyota 1.6L SOHC 4 cyl. engine and is an automatic. I am trying to get a High Output Atlternator to work with this car, but the one I have does not turn on at idle. It would really help if I knew what the idle rpm is on this car, but being an automatic it does not have a RPM gauge. Does anyone know what the idle speed is on my car? Thanks

Basic idle on a US Spec 4A-FE auto is about 900rpms. Atleast that's where mine idles at.

WOW I do not think mine does, or my altenator is way off!! I had a High output one made, and the guy said its built to start at 750 RPM. Well at my idle the alt does not turn on. I tried turning the idle up, but to get the alt to push 14.6 Volts the car was idling so fast that the transmission jerked hard when put in gear. So I put the idle back to stock, and the alt is going back to get fixed to start at 600RPM. When driving I could tell that any speed under 30 MPH, if I am not accelerating, the Alt stops working, so if I fludder my accelerator at any speed under 30 mph the lights will go dim and bright, dim and bright.
