Smoky Start

I have a 2006 Yaris D4D which has done 10,000 miles. However in a morning, or when its stood for a while and gone cool it starts quite rough and produces a puff of smoke. It has Smart Entry & Start which i think might be an issue? Is it allowing the plugs long enough to warm up?

Does anyone else have a similar issue? Its been great apart from that and i'm getting 58 to 62 mpg as an average which i'm pretty happy with! Just ashame its spits out crud in a morning and then sounds rough for 10 to 15 seconds afterwards.

Have to agree with the above really ....... a blast on the motorway will help plus you can get cleaners that you put in with your fuel that works very well if your bothered?

 !

*PMSL at people that still can't spell DIESEL

I can spell it, I can even encorporate it into a sentence...

Diesels suck big fat hairy monkey balls.

Just kidding, iv got 2... they're both fine at what they do.

The 'smog' is a normal thing, it's built-up soot being released that's all; nothing to worry about.

yeah, its just what they do on cold mornings. Mine's been smelling particularly "diesely" lately.

As have been mentioned, a quick "Italian tune-up" won't do any harm either. Clears out the tubes. ;)

Have you also noticed how diesel starts with the word "die...."

Don't worry Dave - my V6 takes longer than the Yaris to warm up too. Nevermind, I can easily make up the rest of the journey in much quicker time... :D

We are a family of 3 diesels and mine is the filthiest on start up. But so long as everyone else's does it thats fine! It gets a blast down the dual carriage way every day on my 70 mile round trip to work! Supermarket Diesel!

Thanks guys!

Try changing from supermarket fuel ........ I noticed a difference when changed to BP diesel

Better performance, less smoke out the back, and is a little quieter

*Performance - doesn't add 100BHP but makes thing feel smoother/cleaner

I'll second that

I tryed supermarket diesel twice.... I noticed alot more smoke on start up and on acceleration... changed back to Shell and no more smoke and the the car runs better.

I used to always run on Tesco stuff and never had a problem. Now I mainly run on Shell (because its convenient) and I don't really notice a difference.

The time I did notice was the 2/3 tank of BP Ultimate Diesel it got in Bedford on the 'Pod weekend.

I'll have to look at that, I got into the habit of filling my Yaris' tank when I was passing a Tesco & I've been doing the same with the Golf so I'll try to nip into Shell instead & see if I notice the difference

My company uses BP as it's filling station and it was fine, then I accidentally filled up with BP Ultimate... I got 20 extra miles to the tank and it started quicker too! Shame im not allowed to fill up with it all the time!

The black smoke's caused by over-fuelling, so the more air you can get in the less likely you are to have the issue - a good sign that the filter does make a difference.

I maintain that mine just doesn't smoke. I've tried all sortd of "under load" with people following me and it just won't do it. Which is good.
