T 180 Run Flat Tyres

I am due to change my 05 XTR D4D soon and the T 180 is top of list except for doubts about run flat tyres. Dealer tells me all Toyota dealers keep 1 new wheel and tyre in stock and is fitted on an exchange basis, also that tyre/wheel is sent to Belgium for repair!!! SO what happens if you need 2 new tyres and what if you have a puncture at weekend. XT5 is coming much higher up my list.

Does anyone have better information?

I could be wrong, but I'm sure my dealer said they kept at least one. Also, my delaer said that the usual national tyre fitters will be able to do them, in time. If all else fails, then you can run one of them flat (that's what they're designed for, I guess) and drive to the next town's Toyota dealer? Not sure how long you are supposed to be able to run with flat tyres, and it's probably at a reduced speed, but should be enough to get you to the next Toyota dealer.

We keep 1 wheel/tyre in stock at all times. If another is needed we can order it VOR for the next morning.

If a new one is needed the owners are charged for the amount of tread they have used. When changing them wheel/tyres we have to fill in a form noting the old tread depths and the cost is worked out.

Do you know how long this replacement service will last for? Three years? Life of car?

Also, is it just for punctures? Or can we come in when the tread is getting low?

Thanks,

Simon

sywy,

not sure how long they will be doing this for, i would guess it will be for a few years until the price of run flats drops and more places get tyre machines that will remove/refit run flats (been told that some tyre machines wont change run flats for some reason?)

So far we have only replaced them due to punctures, not done any because the tread is too low but i guess it will be the same....just costs more as more tread would be worn off.

Thanks, Mart.

BTW, while I'm here ...

Could be a silly question, but with the TPMS, do I have to check my tyre pressures manually, once I've assertained they are at the correct pressure?

Had slow puncher this weekend down to 16psi. Warning light came on and kept reflating it to 32psi, light went off. rang my Toyota dealer and had it booked in today. They were absolutely brilliant and had it sorted within 30 mins of dropping lt off. Basically it,s a wheel swoop and reprogramming the tyre warning setup. it didn,t cost anything either cause of the lack of tyre wear.

I was told that the optimum pressure was 32psi but the tyres could go down to 26psi and still wouldn't activate the TPWS.

I guess it's like any normal tyre as far as ensuring that the pressures are kept correctly but you get the benefit of the TPWS if the tyre either gets a puncture or deflates naturally over a period of time below 26psi when the car reminds you to top up the air.

Thought I might share my tale (of woe) with fellow readers.

The tale begins one Saturday afternoon at 3pm. I hit a kerb and split a tyre. The tube went down flat, and I mean flat, wasn't very happy to drive on it . Didn't live too far away, so limped home. Rang local Toyota dealer, Parts closed, no one to help till Monday ...... NO SPARE TYRE!!!. Moral: don't have a puncture out of hours. Happily, I have a spare car, so was not too inconvenienced.

However, Rang dealer on Monday, and arranged to get new wheel assembly, as Bridgestone are not importing the tyres as yet. New wheel assembly fitted (tyre and alloy), car taken to dealer for TPMS, and they could only get the two front tyres talking to the controller. The back two refused to co-operate. Next day, dealer decided that they would have to put two brand new sensors in the rims, and would get back to me, after ordering parts. Took car back week later for sensors to be fitted. No deal, still no communication with the controoler. Soooo, dealer than decides that they would have to order two new complete wheel assemblies. OK, I thought....one puncture, 3 brand new wheel assemblies. ho, hum.

OK. Waited a week to hear from the dealer. Rang back, only to be told that as the dealer had already taken a hit with getting the new sensors that didn't work, they were loath to Shell out on two brand new wheel assemblies and that Toyota weren't playing ball.

Meanwhile, I'm left driving round with the tyre indicator permanently lit, and wouldn't now know whether I have the correct tyre presssures. So I await the next installment ;¬()

That is bad Pr for both your Dealer and Toyota. One hopes they are reading these posts and get their finger out. Truely bad service on both parts!!!!!

Best Pressure is 30 psi. U will feel it when u will drive the car. When it is lower, ur pick-up will b less smooth.

Fortunately, I didn't face any flat tyre story in last 4 months till buying the car. The 225/60R16 tyres are much more reliable then the 215/70R16.

Thought I would update my last post.

The binnacle (odometer, etc) malfunctioned last week, with the resultant of a replacement, so I have now got a new one (0 miles) T180  .

As for the tyres. The latest is now that the dealer has ordered 2 brand new wheel assemblies, so I *should* have the TPM up and running properly in 2 weeks time.

Oh, by the way, the TPM is now blinking permanently. Phoned dealer and was told to bring car in so tyre pressures could be checked. Said that I had done that when it first occured. Pressues OK.

We wait and see. Makes me wonder if the TPM itself is faulty

Druand .You are probably better off than me but while you are deliberating your next purchase have a look at the ltest Mk3 XT-R.It has all the active driving components that the XT-4 and XT-5 have.It is the same spec as the 4 but without leather seats. It does not have some of the electrical Gizmos that the 5 does (Sat Nav etc at 1500 ponds extra) What it does have is the advaantages of the T-180 fully opening rear door.

I ,as chronicled in earlier pages, had misgivings about the lack of a spare wheel but iIbought one to keep at home. The financial savings are massive. My last two cars have been new Saabs but I am absolutely delighted with the Rav ,it has performed and behaved brilliantly.Long may it do so!

Jock,

Local dealer contacted me about new XTR but it does not have cruise control, I took delivery of new CRV (2007 model) 1st march. 2.2 CDTi ES model.

So far only done 600mls but very pleased. Lots of plus points but not quite as good a looker from front as Rav. Tailgate and load area very good. Performance ? not been pushing it to hard yet but will be at Granite Rally(safety scrutineer) in Aberdeen next month so will have first try off road.

Cruise is essential for me 1) have problems with hip joint, 2) I stay in Girvan at the start of the UK's longest (32 miles) average speed (specs) camera system. Mostly 2-way road at 60mph. Nearest main town is 20 miles going through 7 gantries = possible 12 points and 12 again on way home. Leave home early morning,no traffic up into 6th gear and try to drive at 60 for 32 miles !!! watching speedometer instead of road!!! and home again at night.

Clare,

It sounds like exactly the same problem I had with mine back in early Feb.

I assume you have had a new wheel/tyre assembly as a replacement for your puncture?

If so, it's likely that the garage haven't re-registered the new wheel to the car's TPM system.

I bought an ex-demo, and the pre delivery inspection picked up a slow puncture on a tyre which meant it needed a new wheel/tyre set on one of the wheels.

I drove the car for a week and than the warning light came on (flashing).

The garage took the car back in and had to reset the the TPM and re-register each individual wheel's sensor to the car's system. It's been fine since.

Many thanks Paul, I wondered if it was that problem when I read your post about it.The thing that anoys me is that I took it to the "Main Dealer" over here on the Island and the exact wording of the invoice was" check tyre pressure warning light. no fault found. reset system. possible cause of warning light activation could be recently fitted new tyre". What I want to know is who do I have redress with? The Main dealer in the UK who priginally fitted the replacement Tyre/Wheel or the Main dealer over ere on the Island who was supposed to have sorted the TPW light coming back on? I await replies!!!
