Hi , I just fitted new discs and pads to the front of my Carina E.

Is it normal for the brakes to feel "dead" for a while .......ie do discs need a bedding in period? :)

not sure what you mean by dead but with new discs and pads fitted the pedal should become more firmer as the pads bed in but shouldn,t take to long.have you bled them at all {shouldn,t have to but just asking}

I changed the discs and pads on my 1.8 Avensis a month ago. This was to eliminate a judder. There was no bedding-in period. They felt and responded perfectly from the outset. The design is very similar to that of the Carina E.

On the Avensis forum There have been a number of concerns expressed about Genuine Toyota Pads/discs. Regular reports of squeels, warped discs, glazed pads etc. The current thinking is to buy Quality copy parts. I've fitted Mintex pads/discs because of this. Perhaps there are issues with Genuine Carina brakes as well. (faulty prouction batch perhaps??)

When you say 'dead' do you mean poor response? spongey?

Could some air have entered the system?

Well the pedal had a kind of "hard" feel to it..........this could be just me tho being used to the old discs which had a fairly large wear ridge on them.

Discs and pads I fitted btw were "delphi"

Next on my list is new drums...........anyone got a link to a good supplier? :)

Have you examined the inner surface on your drums yet? They may not need replacing. My car has done 110K and the drums are unscored with no lips/ridges.

You could try these:

By the way, did you refit the 'anti-rattle' plates on back of your pads? Mine are virtually shot and they are a dealer part (I think). I will be fitting copy disc/pads (Mintex again) in the spring and wonder whether these are really necessary.

Cheers for the link Gazza.

Both rear drums are badly scored and have seen better days.

Regarding the anti rattle thinghy's , I have fitted pads both with and without these and they dont seem to make any diff, I actually thought they were anti squeal shims.

This time I just smeared a bit of copper grease on the back of the pads, also greased the sliding pins which were a mess.
