Diff Bearings

Hi all, I own a 2001 Avensis 1.8 VVTi (engine replaced last sept free of charge!) This car has now covered almost 77k miles, mainly driven on motorways or A roads.

On a recent drive to Scotland I noticed the gearbox seemed to have developed a grinding noise. During the course of our trip the noise got worse. on returning home I took it to my local garage. The owner checked the oil level, all ok and diagnosed the problem as differential bearings.

Has anyone else suffered the same fault and if so what was the most cost effective cure?

Very dissapointed with this car and doubt I will buy another!!

I had a corolla 1.4 vvt-i engine replaced due to high oil use. Sold car the new owners after a few months found a gear box noise it turned out to be the main shaft bearing in the gearbox. This was at 53k i think there abouts anyway. Was told it was a common fault. HTH

i had new shaft bearings done on my 2001 1.8 vvti, cost £375 versus £800 at Toyota. get it diagnosed by Toyota then shop around.

  • 9 months later...

I had a new engine under warranty at 73,000....now at 83,000

Now my gearbox is making a noise and it looks like it is the differential end (rather than the input end). I discovered this only last week and i intend to have the gearbox stripped next week and a new full set of 6 bering fitted...£500 + vat in Lancashire.

This is what i have gleaned, its approximately correct i think.....

First, be carefull who you let do the job cos their are many people doing this work and its done to very different standards.

a/.....2 bearing on differential

b/.....2 bearings on main shaft.....think this is the input shaft.

c/.....2 other bearings referred to as the top and bottom bearings.....think these can be changed by removing an inspection plate and are often changed then the noise comes on/off when you engage/dis-engage the clutch whilst the car in running but stationary.

2 bearing on differential.......This is where mine requires attention i think. When the car is moving if i depress the clutch and keep the revs high then the noise will cease and come back as the clutch is engaged. I am told that the pinion and crown wheel of the diff will not be badly warn if the bearing damage is not too bad....so i am getting it done early.

I am told that some of these re-build operations will re-assemble the box with the original bearings and risk it......in my case i have a quote for all bearings being replaced (i hope). However, i am told that it can also be ok to leave old bearings in place provided the whole case is correctly cleaned and any trace of particles totally removed from oilways and bearing cages

If anyone can straighten me out on any of the above points i would be thankfull.
