Dodgy Sale!

Hi guys.

As some of you know I am selling my gen 6.

Today I had someone come round to look at my baby.

He said he was Ghanaian but had a UK driving license.

After all the usual looking around haggling we agreed on a price.

Then came the dodgy bit. Payment.

He wanted to do the signing before handing the cash but I didn't as he wanted to write me a cheque.

I refused because I know the cheque can bounce.

He then made a few calls and arranged for a friend to bring a lump sum of cash.

He went away and then half day later he came back with £££

All the notes where in £10's. My eyes lit up.

When counting I questioned the authenticity of the notes (hunch) and I've no idea how to truly check if it's real or not.

I said to him it's a lot to carry around and I wanted to bank it first.

He kicked up a fuss about wasting time and all and insisted to do the paperwork.

I wanted him to come to HSBC with me which was only down the road and pay it into my account. If it clears I'll sign it over.

He refused and said it's not part of the deal. After much dispute he offered to pay me further £100 cash.

At this point I wasn't convinced.

I had enough of his persuasion and called the offer off. He grabbed the bag and left.

I was very annoyed because the whole day was for nothing but at the same time I wasn't convinced that the money was real?

I really didn't trust him. My GF said I did the right thing.

you did the right thing m8, always rely on your gut instinct ;)

Yeah I agree.

Guy sounds like a complete ********

But think about it if you had taken the money and it was fake you would not only have lost your car but the money as well.

If he was geniune and really wanted the car he would of happily went to the bank with you I know I would have.

As above you done the right thing mate, anyone that was honest wouldn't have minded going down the road to bank the cash.

Well done.

Unlucky mate, checking notes is tricky, especially if theres lots of them.

The silver strip in the note should be a woven metallic strip running all the way throught the note, tearing slightly along it should proove if the strip is painted on the surface - fake, or runs through the note - genuine. The words 'Bank of England' should also be slightly raised, but this isn't un-forgable now.

You did the right thing though.

Something else to bear in mind is that under the new(ish) rules the seller is responsible for verifying the identity of the buyer.

If you send back the V5 slip to the DVLA and the address or other details of the buyer are false then the car and any incurred speeding fines, debt etc. are still your responsibility.

Another good reason to avoid anybody dodgy.

Paul.

Very true... You just can't be too careful now... If he was genuine, he wouldn't have given you soo much sh*t about taking the car then... You never know... You have have seen your car on crime watch...

There whas a mix of £10's and £20's and all the notes where in mixed condition. Now if they're where fresh off the production line I'd be worried.

I've given up advertising my car now because I'm not having mch luck at this time of year. I'll try again later in Jan.

What do you think of internet transfer? If I had someone trasfer the money from their account to mine is it fool proof?

cash sales imo are always the best - however if the guy didnt want to go to the bank then defo something dodgy.. I mean all it would have taken was 10mins to pay in the money and then you sign the car over - simple..! NEVER release a vehicle unless funds are cleared!

Internet transfer should be ok.,. But I'm with Rash... Cash works and NEVER let it go without the money in your bank or your hand... I ran a bar for a while and saw a good deal of dodgy notes.. Some of them are really good...
