Squealing Breaks

After I break hard my breaks start squealing, and its rather loud.

I don't want to get owned by a garage, so what is it most likely to be, the pads, Disc's or what?

If its easy enough to do it myself, anyone got a illustrated guide?

its most likely the pads as it mite be worn down to the metal, hence the squealing once that comes in contact wiht the disc! changing them arent a problem, if you know what you are doing. you mite wanna get them changed soon as the metal from the pad can wreck your break disks, which happened to me not to long ago! had to change the whole lot! :ffs:

Brakes can sqeal if there is excessive brake dust on the discs but in your case you say its loud so like your man said above to change the pads as the indicator metal piece on the side of the pad is touching the disc and hence sqealing, the squealing may suddenyl stop thats because this metal indicator has snapped off!! could be messy if you keep driving and the pad gets soo small and manages to leave the caliper hence no braking! New pads cost about £10 - £40 all you need is a 14mm or 12mm spanner and a 9" G-clamp and you can do the job easily.

looks like its sorted now :)

me and a mate had a look at it, looks like the garage who fitting the new breaks nearly a year ago didn't bleed the systems and put too much break fluid in.
