2.2 D4-d - Poor Fuel Consumption

I have recently purchased a new 2006 2.2 D4-D T4 Avensis Tourer.

This will be my 4th diesel car, and I was looking forward to achieving the usual high MPG that you would expect from a modern diesel.

I have now done almost 3k miles, and have only managed to return an average of 31 MPG. It achieves about 23 MPG on an urban cycle, and about 37 MPG on long distance. These are actual figures, and not just off the trip computer. I have driven as cautiously as possible to see if it makes any difference, but still the same poor return.

I have been back to Toyota, who say there is nothing they can do as the engine manages its self, and there is nothing they can adjust or check. All they have said is it may get better as the car runs its self in!!

Anyone experienced similar problems, or got any suggestions?

According to the official stats, the 2.2 is only a little more thirsty than the 2.0, so it does sound like yours is using more than it should.

I had a corolla 2.0 D4-D a few years ago, and was told by the dealer that the mpg would improve as the engine settles in. I can't recall the explanation for this, but the economy did improve steadily. I was driving about 1000 to 2000 miles per month at the time, so it was run in very quickly, but at 10K it was achieving 45 - 50 mpg on a motorway run.

Sounds like something's not quite right. I've been driving a T180 Tourer since early October. It's just approaching 10,000 miles (really!) and is returning around 42mpg. My previous BMW and Audi diesels were more economical but the T180 is faster. Overall I'm very happy.

Sounds very wrong - I bought a new 2.2 D4-D in September; over just short of 7000 miles the best I have seen on a tankful is 57mpg, the worst 45.41 - overall average is 50.3mpg. Incidentally, the overall average over the first 3k miles was 52.95, the figures have dipped as the warm-up cycle has extended in the colder weather.

My daily run is a 30 mile each way commute, about 8 miles urban, 22 miles motorway. I can't imagine how I could possibly get the mpg to dip into the 30s and keep my licence for more than a couple of days!

I would suggest that you insist that Toyota take a serious look at your engine. If they still claim nothing is wrong then try and get them to lend you another example for a couple of days to see how the two different cars compare. Good luck getting it sorted...

My 1.8 vvt-i does 40 mpg on average on a run upto the coast i've seen 50mpg fully loaded. My dads Avensis 1.8 vvt-i also but the old model does the same 50 mpg on a run upto mid wales fully laden and both of us have lead feet.
