Changing Headlights Qs

Got to take my avensis in to my local dealer on monday morning so they can check that it is a design fault, they did'nt seem to know anything about this extended warranty so i will let you know.

cheers paul.

Today my local dealer replaced both headlights with new redesigned units including metal bulb holders. He also skimmed the front discs and all this to Mr T's account. The workshop manager was brilliant and confirmed that headlights now have a 5 year warranty. Blown bulbs are not covered by the warranty but they would cost approximately £40 each to replace including labour. Not bad! :D

The bulb holders of my Avensis's headlights were almost burnt after 3 years (I always drive with ligths on), they wouldn't move with the position control and the light intensity was low. Took the car to local Toyota dealer and got everything substituted, had only to pay 30 € for new "extra special lights", 30% more light etc, but I suspect these produce less heat and will not burn the holders as the original lamps did. I think it's a well known faulty electrical design and they should replace it free of charge. I actually found here the Toyota Service Bulletin where this problem is presented, email me (cpedro01@hotmail.com) if you need it.

Good luck!

Took my car in and i will be recieving a cheque thru the post for the full amount i paid for the headlights. They told me the warranty had been extended and they just wanted to make sure i had fitted the lights properly,if i had not read this post i would have had a bill for £300 so thank you everybody. :D :D

Hi Paul, that's a result. :yahoo: So glad you got your money back. Mine is going in next Monday for a new headlight and for the steering recall.

I took mine back and asked for a replacement as it was a known fault and the car was just out of warranty. They refused to replace them and asked me to stump up £600 to replace the headlights.

Ended up buying an extended warranty and getting them replaced under that, asked them to shove two upgrade bulbs in while they were at it, now one has blown after about 5 months. Just bought 2 arctic white upgrades, about to put them in but looks like a mare to get that retaining clip off from behind the mattery on the drivers side. :(

I suggest you write to Toyota GB and let them know. I have a letter from them stating that if my car is less than 5 years old and has not covered 100,000 miles it is covered under their extended warranty. Who was the Toyota dealership you used, think you should name and shame them.

Let me know how you get on claiming your refund.

Just tried to replace the bilbs, honestly that is a joke. How that can be classed as DIY maintenance God only knows? Cut my hands to ribbons in the process, I just can't see how it can be done. Does this mean you have to take it in to the dealer every time you want to replace a bulb :ffs: .

My dealer in Cardiff are notoriously picky and unhelpful, I prefer tp avoid them at any cost but I guess I have no choice, and all for a bulb :censor:

Just had my nearside headlight replaced on my 2003 T3X completely free of charge under the 5 year/100,000 mile extended warranty. Great service from Thurlow Nunn Toyota of St.Ives Cambridgeshire.

My headlights are also very dim{non existent on a dark lane}and i have a build up of condensation in the drivers side headlight.I bought the car in august last year and the warranty ran out in sept 06 doe's antbody think i could still have my headlight unit changed.

My 53 reg T3X is out of warranty and got the dreaded internal condensation on the passenger side headlamp. I wrote to Toyota GB and got a letter back stating that because their had been issues surrounding the front headlamps involving the bulb holder and water ingress and as a result of feedback from the Toyota Centre network and customers it had been decided that as a goodwill gesture the warranty on headlamps had been increased to 5 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first. :)

Get down to your local Toyota dealer and ask them to replace it and if they fob you off tell them you will be writing to Toyota GB.

Hi Chris Be

I am wondering if you could help me or anyone else you have contacted on the site. I bought my Avensis last august 06 second hand, I paid £10,000 on a 2003/53 with 47,000 on clock. It is in mint condition apart from headlamps. I have experienced the same problem that everyone else seems to be having with condensation and bulbs burning the units out. I have replaced both headlamps and now I am on the third one. I am at my witts end with this problem, and becoming out of pocket.

I am pleased with the car apart from this problem. I have also took a number of pictures of the burnt unit which is plastic.

Could you give me info on what road to go down with toyota, it would be much appreciated if you can. :censor:

Hi Rob,

well if I were you I would firstly tell your dealer how dissapointed you are with the service relating to the headlights bearing in mind that Toyota GB have clearly stated that the warranty on these has been extended to 5 years/100,000 miles and if that doesn't resolve your problem tell them that you will be writing to Toyota GB asking why your dealer will not replace them under warranty.

Keep us posted.

Chris.

Hi, contact your local Toyota dealer and ask to speak to the service manager. Tell him the problem that you are having with the headlights and then ask him about the extended warranty of 5 years/100,000 miles. If he says he knows nothing about it tell him you will be writing to Toyota GB to request confirmation of this extension to the warranty.

By the way I have just had my second headlight replaced under warranty by TNS of St.Ives in Cambridgeshire and it could not have been easier. I rang them up told them the problem and they asked me to bring it in. I booked it in on a Saturday morning at 08:00 and they replaced it while I waited. Also gave me coffee and the daily newspaper to read while I waited.

Keep me posted.

Chris

Hi Garry,

I bought my 53 reg at an auction in May 2006 and one headlight finished melting and fell off in September (first time I drove it in the dark ?).

The car was 2 weeks less than three years old and had done 63000 miles (and I had just paid for the cambelt).

Toyota only offered slightly reduced cost at first (warrranty ends once your headlamp has done 60K !) - I decided to live with it (and buy a Honda next time).

Then I saw the words about the 5 year warranty at here at TOC, phoned the dealer and they changed both headlights free. :yahoo: . Nothing else broken / fallen off since and I am now cautiously optimistic that the car will be a dream like the 1989 Carina 2.0GLi EXEC I once had.

Hi Chris

Thanks for all the good advice, I took car to the dealers and requested new headlights and informed them like you said about the extended warranty. They were not pleased but agreed with what I was saying and today 12th of July they are fitting new headlights for me free of charge.

Thanks again Chris, much appreciated.

Garry

Hi guys,

I did call today to Toyota about condensation in headlights and they told me that they will change whole units for free(my car does not have warranty any more). They told me also that this problem is well known for toyota.

I did ask them also about bulb replacement(very poor light) and they could not recommend any.

I have a appointment for 6 of october.I will let you now after it.

Any advice what bulbs will give me more lights (my car:Avensis 2003,T4,2.00 litre VVTi)

Cheers
