Radio Reception Gone Bad! Any Clues

My GF has a 01 Yaris. It has the standard Yaris radio and CD player (i.e no mods made). The problem is that all of a sudden the reception on FM has gone completely with mostly just bad noise/interference with a faint reception in the background. The CD player still works fine. I think that the AM/MW channels are still working (dont really use them so cant really say for sure).

I removed the dash etc.. to see if the aerial cable had come loose or something like that but all seemed fine.

Anyone got any ideas?? Nothing happened prior to the radio going funny. Is it a common occurance ? any way to find out whats wrong?

Or is it a case of having to get a new radio!!

Any help would be great.

I have heard that some P1 Yaris' had an issue with water getting into the stereo system in some way, from a leaking heater matrix...

Did you find any water when you had a look?

Other than that, only other solution I can think of is treating the missus to a new HU as a late Christmas present as it could just be the system on the way out....

The aerial is still on the roof - doesnt look damaged. The aerial connection seems ok at the roof and at the back of the radio.

If got a multimeter and tested the aerial connection should it read a certain amount of Ohms?? is that possible? Dont want to get a new headunit and find out that is was something to do with the aerial connection or aerial.

(I am going to try use a coat hanger to see if that changes anything 1st!!!!)

I don't suppose anyone knows a solution to this problem do they??

My girlfriend has the same problem in her Yaris, it happened ages ago she just hasn't had it looked at. I'm going to check the fuzes at the weekend but I doubt thats the problem as the radio can still be turned on, its just the fm that doesn't work.

i snapped my ariel off once, so i baught a new one from Halfords they have loads of differnt ariels there and also you can get ariel boasters. dont know how to fit them tho.

Its you yaris's way of telling you to upgrade the stereo :D
