St162 Problem

hey all, im QSPR_2 im new to the forums,

i have a 1989 Celica ST162 (with the 3S-GE engine)

my problem is this, about a month ago i installed a K & N Pod Filter, the Battery was extremely flat but i didn't have the cash to buy a new one until abt a week ago. there was jump starting the car every 4 days.

now to the probelm,

i bought a new Battery and after i installed it i was driving for about 20 minutes and the rpm meter jumped to redline without my putting any throttle, then after about 2 seconds dropped to nothing, then repeated itself, scared i turned off the car and parked it on the side of the road, my brother came we tried to start it but it wouldnt start, remembering that i bought a new Battery that day! and we jump started the car the rpm meter jumped up straight away to redline but the car was idleing, my brother drove the celica home while i drove his car, i noticed that the brake lights and the indicators were not lighting up, however when we started the car the indicators on the console were lighting up,

i debated with my brother, he thought the pod filter could have made the fuel managment system spasm.

however i though the voltage regulator, and altinator could have died out. or even a fuse or two blew.

i was wondering your what your thoughts are on the matter, and whats the best way to get around this situation, i am wanting to keep the performance parts on.

please help me.

Hello mate. Welcome to TOC.

I think the problem is not related to the filter at all. It's probably justa coincidence that it started around the same time. However. Check all the wiring around the engine bay, make sure all connectors are secure. Double check Battery connections. Check the output of the alternator when it's running with a voltmeter. Should be around 14 - 15 volts. Any significant amount more or less suggests the alternator is at fault.

thats doesnt at all explain the rpm meter jumping to 6000rpm,

and also i cnt start the car, its not the Battery coz its brand new... but when the key is turned to on, the Battery icon on the console shines, and the Battery meter shows empty.

and now i can't even jump start it, it only starts after you use the jump start cables to another car + an external jump starter at the same time, and it only starts on the off chance.

PLEASE HELP, i cannot afford to not have this car running, i am desperate

OK. Firstly the rev counter is electronic. It's likely to misbehave if you have electrical gremlins. Trust me ;)

Logical sequence to check. Assuming you haven't already .

Battery terminals.

Earth cable connection to chassis. There's also one from the chassis to gearbox. Check this one too.

Starter motor terminals. Take them all off and clean them to be sure.

If that don't work you need to look at the starter relay. Check connections are dry and clean.

The fact that you are having to use the Battery and a jump suggests dodgy connections. Just a matter of finding which ones. Good luck.

My 162 has had bad earthing connections, so undo all of these and clean the connectors with some emmery paper or a fine file.

Double check any of the wiring looms that run past the Battery, and those entering the fuse box and make sure nothing got didsturbed when the Battery got replaced.

It's worth checking the condition of the earth straps on older cars too.

These can start to corrode and go 'high resistance' - The whole concept of electric circuitry requires a good earth !

New straps are pennies from Motor Factor shops and can save loads of hassle
