D4d Strange Problem

2001 Avensis D4D

Every time i set off the engine management light comes on for a few seconds, and the temperature guage jumps up and down. It allso revs up sometimes. This only occurs when i set off or when in cruising mode and i put my foot down.

As the management light only comes on for a few seconds then clears will it show a fault code on a diagnostic machine?

I have a OBD11 diagnotic code reader (Innova 3110) but it will not work on the D4D as deisel cars did not have to be OBD11 compliant till 2004. So am i stuck with having to take it to Mr T.

Just a quick update on this.

Finally traced the fault to a dodgy wire between the coolant temperature sensor and wiring loom.
